The Hadzabe Tribe in Tanzania

The Hadzabe are among about 130 ethnic groups in Tanzania.
They are known by different variations- Hadzabi, Hadzane, Hadzape, Hadzapi, Hatsa and Watindiga. In the Kilimanjaro region, for instance, they are known as Watindiga. In Mtwara, they call them Wazabi.
Though Tanzania’s 2022 Census has not provided their population estimates, the United Nations says their numbers range from 1,300 to 1,500, a handful of the 61.7 million Tanzanians.

Tanzania Tourist Visa

Where to Apply for Online Visa for Tanzania.

Applying for a Tanzania Tourist Visa is a straightforward process, and it’s important to obtain one before your trip to ensure smooth entry into the country. Here’s how and when to apply for a Tanzania visa, along with information on the cost:

Tanzania Tourist Visa
Tanzania Tourist Visa

How to Apply for a Tanzania Tourist Visa:

1. Determine the Type of Visa You Need:

Tanzania offers different types of visas depending on your purpose of travel. The most common types are:

  • Tourist Visa: For travelers visiting Tanzania for tourism, leisure, or vacation purposes.
  • Business Visa: For individuals traveling to Tanzania for business-related activities.
  • Transit Visa: For travelers passing through Tanzania to another destination.

Make sure to apply for a visa that corresponds to the purpose of your visit.

2. Online Visa Application:

Tanzania has introduced an e-visa system, making the application process convenient. Here’s how to apply online:

  • Visit the official Tanzania Immigration website (https://eservices.immigration.go.tz/visa/) to start your application.
  • Fill out the online visa application form, providing accurate and complete information.
  • Upload the required documents, which usually include a scanned copy of your passport, passport-sized photo, and travel itinerary.
  • Pay the visa fee online using a credit card or another accepted payment method.

3. Wait for Approval:

After submitting your application and payment, you’ll need to wait for the Tanzanian authorities to process your visa. This typically takes a few business days, but it’s a good idea to apply well before your travel date to avoid any last-minute issues.

4. Receive Your e-Visa:

Once your visa is approved, you’ll receive it via email in the form of an e-visa. Print a copy of this e-visa and keep it with you when you travel to Tanzania. You will need to show it to immigration authorities upon arrival.

When to Apply for a Tanzania Tourist Visa:

Applying for your Tanzania visa at least 2 to 3 weeks before your intended travel date is recommended. This allows ample time for processing and ensures that you have your visa in hand before your departure.

Tanzania Tourist Visa Costs:

The cost of a Tanzania visa can vary depending on your nationality, the type of visa you’re applying for, and the duration of your stay. As of my last knowledge update in March 2024, here are the approximate costs for some common visa types:

  • Tourist Visa: Typically costs around $50 to $100 for most nationalities.
  • Business Visa: The cost can range from $250 to $300 for most countries.
  • Transit Visa: Generally less expensive, usually around $30 to $40.

Please note that visa fees are subject to change, and it’s essential to check the most up-to-date information on the official Tanzania Immigration website or contact the Tanzanian Embassy or Consulate in your country for precise and current visa costs.

Remember to have all your required documents, including a valid passport, before starting the visa application process. Ensuring you have the right visa and applying in advance will help make your trip to Tanzania a smooth and enjoyable experience.

LOCATION

Location of Ubuntu Migration Camp

The wildebeest migration moves in a continuous cycle throughout the Serengeti and the Masai Mara of Kenya. To give you the best chance of seeing these restless herds, our mobile camp moves between the northern and southern Serengeti.

Ubuntu Migration Camp North – June to mid-November

In mid-June, we head up to the north of the Serengeti to watch the wildebeest cross the Mara River. This is one of the most dramatic parts of the migration, with hungry crocodiles lying in wait. The huge herds attract a healthy number of predators to the area, with lions, cheetahs, and leopards prowling the plains. Herds of elephants are also found browsing in the lush woodlands along the river and there are more than 500 species of birds to spot.

Ubuntu Migration Camp South – mid-December to mid-March

After all the excitement of the river crossings, we move to the lush grasslands of the south where herds gather to rest, graze and calve. Watch tiny newborn wildebeest quickly learn to steady their wobbly legs and prepare to begin their endless migration, while predators enjoy the easy pickings the newborns offer.

After a leisurely lunch, enjoy siesta time. Take a nap, read a book, or just relax and soak up the atmosphere. Refuel with afternoon tea before we depart for an afternoon/evening game drive. You’ll be back in time for drinks around the campfire and dinner — the perfect chance to unwind after a long day in the bush.

WHEN TO GO

What to expect during the year

Ubuntu Migration Camp follows the wildebeest herds through the Serengeti, so guests can see the Great Migration at any time. The camp is closed from mid-March through mid-June and the first half of November. July and August are the busiest months for tourism, and we recommend traveling outside this time. January, February, September, and October have fewer crowds and great wildlife viewing.

JANUARY – MARCH

Ubuntu is in the southern Serengeti, where the wildebeest herds are grazing and calving until mid-March. There’s usually a break in the rains during January and February and fewer crowds. Migratory birds are in the region as well.

APRIL – MAY

Ubuntu closes for the traditionally wetter period of mid-March until mid-June, using this time to migrate the camp to the northern Serengeti.

JULY – OCTOBER

Ubuntu packs up in mid-March and reopens in mid-June in the north, where the famous Mara River crossings take place. The dry season is great for wildlife sightings.

NOVEMBER – DECEMBER

The last of the river crossings usually take place in October, as the herds travel back into the Serengeti. In early November, Ubuntu closes and reopens two weeks later in the south, where the wildebeest spend the next few months grazing and calving. The short rains refresh the parched grasslands and the migratory birds arrive from Europe and Asia.

From December until March, we move camp to the southern plains of the Serengeti, where the wildebeest go to give birth and graze on lush grass, and predators such as lions and cheetahs gather to prey on the young.

Even at night, the Olakira Migration Camp experience is special. Our mesh-covered stargazing tents allow guests to sleep under a sky of glittering stars.

    Rooms

There are nine tents at Olakira Migration Camp, including one with two bedrooms ideally suited to families. The tents have king-sized beds (twins are also available) and en suite bathrooms with flushing toilets and solar-heated hot water showers. Our tents have been perfectly designed for stargazing; a portion of the tent boasts a 270°-view from beneath a net, offering you the best of the outdoors while remaining indoors. At night, roll your bed into the meshed area to spend the night with the stars glittering above while dreaming about the day’s adventures. It truly is an experience you don’t want to miss.

OLAKIRA MIGRATION CAMP

Location of Olakira Migration Camp

As a mobile camp, our location changes with the seasons. We pack up camp and move twice per year. Note that the camp does not operate in April and May.

Olakira Migration Camp North: June to October

Between June and October, we are in the Bolongoja region in the northern Serengeti, watching the wildebeest herds crossing the Mara River. Watch hundreds of thousands of wildebeest plunge into the water and hurry across in a bid to avoid the crocodiles that lie in wait.

Olakira Migration Camp South: December to March

In December, we move to our southern base in Ndutu, in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Here, the camp is conveniently close to an airstrip, besides being well positioned for excellent wildlife viewing. From here, we look across grassy plains, on which the wildebeest gather to give birth around February each year. Watch thousands of wobbly-legged young finding their feet, something they have to do quickly to avoid the watchful big cats that stalk these plains.

EXPERIENCES

The ultimate Migration camp

Olakira Migration Camp follows the migration throughout the year, offering the closest possible view of the action. The canvas tents are designed to blend into the bush without leaving a trace,  though that doesn’t mean we scrimp on comforts. Admire the sprawling plains of the Serengeti or Ndutu region from the dining tent, or spend a leisurely afternoon in an armchair, watching zebras or Thomson’s gazelles pass by. After dark, dinner is served under the stars.

A typical day on safari at Olakira Migration Camp

The best time to see wildlife is at dusk and dawn when the temperatures are cooler and nocturnal animals are either beginning their night’s activities or winding down. We head out on our first game drive just as it begins to get light, so the time differs slightly depending on the season.

Start the day bright and early with a wake-up call and tea or coffee. Enjoy breakfast before you depart for a morning game drive (or have it packed as a picnic to take with you). You’ll arrive back at camp mid-morning, with a chance to freshen up before lunch.

After a leisurely lunch, enjoy some downtime. Read a book or just relax and soak up the atmosphere. Refuel with afternoon tea before we depart for an afternoon/evening game drive with sundowners. Return in time for a relaxing evening of drinks around the campfire and dinner

Game drives

Game drives are led by expert local guides. We depart early in the morning and again late in the afternoon when it’s coolest and we’re most likely to see predators on the move.

Tanzania Safari Vehicles

Hot-air balloon rides

Don’t miss out on a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to soar above the Serengeti in a hot-air balloon, appreciating the full scope of the wildebeest migration and watching the colors change as the sun rises. This experience is at an additional cost and is weather-dependent.

Serengeti National Park

Family safaris

We welcome families with children over 5 years old and have a large family tent with two separate bedrooms. Depending on camp occupancy, we may be able to accommodate younger children. Please enquire and we can advise further. Note that, although our guides and camp team happily cater to younger guests, Olakira has no specific program for children. Please ask your agent for information regarding private vehicles for your family’s safari.

Meals and refreshments

We source our organic produce from local farmers for a menu of wholesome, delicious meals. Start the day with a continental buffet or a full English breakfast. At lunch, the light buffet includes fresh salads and homemade bread. Dinner is a three-course affair served in the dining tent or under the stars.

OLAKIRA MIGRATION CAMP

What to expect during the year

Olakira Camp follows the wildebeest herds through the Serengeti, which ensures you’ll see the Great Migration at any time of year (except April, May, and November, when the camp is closed). July and August are the busiest months in the Serengeti, when there will be many other visitors in the area.

Great Image Expedition Ltd offers a safari experience like no other. From witnessing the incredible Great Migration to enjoying luxury glamping, this camp has it all. Immerse yourself in the beauty and drama of the Serengeti while creating memories that will last a lifetime.
