Rivertrees Country Inn

Set in Northern Tanzania just outside the bustling safari town of Arusha, Rivertrees looks out toward Mt Kilimanjaro and is perfectly situated for exploring the abundant nature reserves that this region is home to.

Rivertrees Lodge Country Inn
Rivertrees Lodge Country Inn

The inn is a charming country estate that was once an old coffee farm and still retains the nostalgic air of a well-loved homestead. Sprawling ten acres of fertile greenery, the grounds are a natural extension of Mt Meru’s sloping foothills, and offer a sanctuary for the birds and wildlife indigenous to the area.

Elegantly rustic cottages are dotted along the river and in thickets of tall trees, while lush lawns and birdsong make for a peaceful and picturesque setting. Set in the heart of an area rich in nature reserves, montane forests, and vibrant village culture, the scope for exploration is endless.

The restaurant concocts tasty meals of garden-fresh ingredients and old family recipes, as well as oven-fired pizzas and the best of the region’s locally grown coffees. Delicious candle-lit dinners are served by the warmth of the fireplace, or under the stars and the watchful eyes of resident owls.

Rivertrees combines unpretentious comfort with subtle accents of style to create a timeless pause in a traveler’s journey, and a sense of warmth and genuine welcome.

Because Rivertrees grew in stages, each cottage was designed with individual thought and care, and furnished with unique attention. The inn’s design makes the most of the riverine nooks and bends, and clearings in leafy groves, to grant each dwelling its sense of privacy and peace.

The restaurant

The restaurant makes for a relaxing setting for a book and a coffee, or a garden-fresh meal in the sunshine. Winding pathways weave a lazy loop through the spacious grounds, and reveal a sparkling swimming pool and a massage hut for those that enjoy surrendering to relaxation.

For the more active character, Rivertrees also serves as the perfect launchpad for myriad adventures and explorations of its surroundings. Be it a night or a week, there is plenty to do, or if you prefer – nothing at all.

In keeping with the nature of the place, Rivertrees’ restaurant specializes in gourmet country cuisine, and many of the ingredients are picked fresh from its gardens. The recipes are based on tried-and-true old family favorites, and the pizzas turned out of the wood-burning oven are understandably popular among regulars.

What adds an extra element to mealtimes is the stunning settings to choose from: out in the gardens under tall shady trees, overlooking the waters winding beneath the river deck, by the warm fireside indoors, or even in the beautifully atmospheric old Farm House.

Complimentary Wi-Fi and the best of the region’s locally grown coffee make it the perfect place to catch up with the world or to sit back with a book and enjoy the peace in the dappled sunshine.

A popular meeting place for nearby residents, the restaurant and bar are open all day, and make for the perfect stopover en route to or from Kilimanjaro International Airport, be it for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

River House

With all the style and understated elegance of the owner’s private pied-a-terre, the River House is well suited to those with discerning taste, and who value secluded space and exclusivity. Two ample bedrooms and a lavish living room can comfortably host a group of four, while the wrap-around veranda and its river views offer a peaceful setting for repose.

River Cottage

Snugly set in forested thickets and perched high on the riverbank, two spacious cottages are designed to complement the privacy and seclusion of their natural element. A terrace opening onto the forest and the outdoor rain showers invite inhabitants to soak in the beauty of their surroundings and appreciate the wildlife animating the canopy overhead.

The Farm House

The Farm House was the heart of the coffee estate before it first became a B&B, and still retains the air of a much-loved home, adorned with family antiques and old portraits on its walls. Containing four en-suite rooms, each with its entrance, the house can comfortably accommodate families or groups of up to ten, with plenty of space for lounging on its vast veranda or curling up in front of the fireplace.

The Garden Rooms

The delightful Garden Rooms are each uniquely and tastefully furnished and yield views across acres of lush lawns from the shelter of fertile foliage. Several are adjoined for families and friends, while others offer couples the exclusivity and romance of their own private space. The Rivertrees reservation team makes a point of allocating each room according to the needs of their guests and takes care to ensure that the right match is made for the perfect stay.

Activities

Rivertrees is immersed in the natural beauties indigenous to Northern Tanzania, and there is never any shortage of exploring to do. Opt for Arusha National Park and the foothills of Mt Meru a mere 15 minutes away, or spend an afternoon canoeing on Duluti’s spectacular crater lake. A cycle through the colorful bustle of the village and past smallholder coffee projects offers insight into local life.

LOCAL VILLAGE TOUR

A few hours meandering through the bustling village of Usa River offers an enchanting insight into day-to-day Tanzanian life and a wonderful way to interact with the vibrant culture of the region. A guide will lead the way past local farms, stopping to talk farming methods with the people working the fields, before escorting you to the heart of the community to impart a flavor of the color and vitality of the village.

LAKE DULUTI CANOEING

A short drive in the direction of Arusha leads to the little-known gem that is Lake Duluti Forest Reserve, whose lake is a crater enclosed by plush slopes of forest leading down to the water’s edge. An afternoon canoeing across its calm surface offers stunning views of Mt Meru, as well as a wealth of birdlife resident to its surroundings. Most notably, flocks of Cattle Egrets numbering in the hundreds swoop in overhead as they return to roost toward evening.

Whilst the swarming safari circuit circles Arusha and Kilimanjaro, Rivertrees is tucked away out of town, and serves as a gateway to the abundance of natural wonders indigenous to Northern Tanzania, as well as a beautiful destination in its own right. For those in transit to and from safari, it provides a peaceful pause between destinations… And for those who are lingering longer, there is a wealth of interests just on its doorstep.

ARUSHA NATIONAL PARK DAY TRIP

Arusha National Park
Arusha National Park

This treasure of an understated park merits a whole safari in its own right, and it spans a territory teeming with natural wonders. Its terrain scales the lichen-forested slopes up to Mt Meru’s craggy peak, in whose foothills nestle the flamingo-filled Momela lakes. Buffalo dot the marshy heart of Ngurdoto Crater, and grassy glades of wildlife intersperse cool shady forests festooned with orchids, birds, and colobus.

    LOCATION

    Location of Roho ya Selous

In the heart of Nyerere National Park — the largest reserve in Africa — Roho ya Selous is perfectly positioned for excellent game viewing, close to a key waterway that links Lake Manze to Lake Nzerakera. Here, pods of hippos wallow and fish eagles scan the landscape from their perches. Giraffes wander through the camp on their way to the water and impala graze on the grass around our tents.

Nyerere is a different type of environment to the grassy plains of northern Tanzania. This is a marshy landscape of palm trees, lakes, and rivers and is home to elephants, buffalos, lions, hippos, leopards, and one of the largest populations of wild dogs on the planet. Plus, bird enthusiasts can try and spot the more than 400 recorded bird species, including a good number of Pel’s fishing owls, in the region. Despite the excellent game, there are far fewer visitors here than in the Serengeti, making the safari experience feel much more exclusive.

EXPERIENCES

Simple and stylish

The name Roho ya Selous means ‘heart of the Selous’, and that’s exactly where we are. Balancing adventure with plenty of comforts, the camp offers seasoned travelers an authentic safari experience in Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve).

Roho ya Selous Luxury Camp
Roho ya Selous Luxury Camp

A typical day on safari at Roho ya Selous

The best time for game viewing is in the cooler early mornings and late afternoons when animals are at their most active. Depending on the season, your day may start slightly earlier or later. If you have booked a private vehicle, please discuss schedule preferences with your guide.

A day at Roho ya Selous starts with an early wake-up call and a cup of tea or coffee. Have some breakfast at camp or have your meal packed to enjoy on your morning game drive. You’ll be back in camp in time for lunch.

The afternoon is time to rest. Read a book, take a dip in the pool, or have a siesta. Refuel with afternoon tea before heading out onto the lake, where you can sip a G&T onboard our boat. Round off the perfect day with drinks around the campfire and a leisurely dinner.

Game drives

We have seven-seater, open-sided game vehicles for exploring further afield in the reserve and getting closer to large herbivores and predators. The vehicles have canvas roofs, power points, and fridges — everything needed to stay comfortable out in the bush for as long as you like.

Walking safaris

Head out on foot for an intimate exploration of the Selous. Stop and examine the tiniest creatures, such as ants and butterflies, and learn about tracking animals using their prints and dung. Plus, there’s the excitement of getting close to large animals as they pass by.

Boating Safari
Boating Safari

Boating

One of the things that separates Nyerere from other major Tanzanian parks is its boating safaris. From a safe distance, float past crocodiles on the sandbanks and hippos in the shallows, watching elephants come down to drink and birds nesting on the islands.

Fishing

Combine a boat safari with a spot of fishing. The rivers hold a good population of tigerfish and various types of catfish.

Family safaris

We warmly welcome families with children over 5 at Roho ya Selous. The ease of access makes the reserve a fuss-free destination. We have a family tent with an enclosed en suite children’s room, ideal for younger kids, and a range of activities to keep the whole family entertained. Please note that guests must be 16 years old to join our walking safaris, but there is no age limit for game drives or boat safaris. Please ask your agent about the option of hiring a private vehicle for your family safari.

Pemba lies to the north of its larger and better-known sister island, Unguja, and here you will find natural peace and tranquility.

Remote and private, Fundu Lagoon is situated by a sandy beach on the liminal fringes where the jungle meets the ocean and is only accessible by boat. The hotel has a range of twelve private hillside and beachfront suites as well as wonderful communal spaces that include four bars, a jetty, a fusion spa, a stunning infinity pool, five-star dive facilities, and a spacious open-sided restaurant serving a wide range of delicious cuisine.

Fundu Lagoon combines luxury alongside a distinctly Robinson Crusoe atmosphere. Pemba Island remains largely undeveloped and lives up to its ‘Spice Island’ nickname with the scent of cloves perfuming the air. Bush babies, flying foxes, and vervet monkeys all call Pemba home while in the ocean, dolphins, tuna, and a magical underwater world of coral reefs and steep ocean drop-offs enchant and amaze.

Fundu Lagoon is a consistent winner of the Good Safari Guide ‘Best Marine Safari’ Award and it smoothly continues the holiday experience for guests who arrive from a Tanzanian safari. It is an ideal destination for friends, couples, and families who are seeking a place to genuinely unwind and switch off in romantic and peaceful surroundings.

Because of Fundu’s remote location, all meals and soft drinks are included in the published price and it should be noted that the hotel is not suitable for children under the age of twelve.

Accommodation

Fundu Lagoon’s thatched roofs shade and shelter luxury tented accommodation. The resort layout flows along the contours where the jungle hillside meets the shoreline, making the most of the natural environment to give each room a tremendous sense of privacy alongside stunning ocean views. All of Fundu’s rooms have their terraces furnished with sun loungers while suites have private plunge pools, chill-out areas, and wide decking. Wherever you choose to stay at Fundu Lagoon it will be easy to believe you have discovered your secret island hideaway.

 NIMALI SERENGETI

Quintessential Tanzania.

When the Maasai named this place, it was in honor of the vast landscapes that seemed to go on forever. They called it Seringit. Endless plains. Today, we know it as the Serengeti – where earth and sky collide in one of the most spectacular safari destinations in Africa. This is where you’ll find Nimali Serengeti, at the center of this legendary, 15,000km² national park, surrounded by one of the most prolific wildlife regions on the continent.

Nimali Serengeti

Location

Enjoying a brand-new position close to Makoma Hill, in the heart of the central Serengeti, the reimagined Nimali Serengeti enjoys uninterrupted views out over plains dotted with kopjes on one of the Serengeti’s most renowned great wildebeest migration routes, with the herds moving through from April to June and October to December each year. The game viewing here is outstanding all year round, with large herds of buffalo and elephant, an abundance of plains game, and exceptional big cat sightings.

Accommodation

There are 12 tented suites at Nimali Serengeti, each enjoying panoramic views out over the surrounding landscapes of the central Serengeti. Two tents are connected by a shared walkway making them perfect for families. Each suite has its own private verandah and en-suite bathroom with a bathtub and outdoor shower.  The lodge’s central lounge, dining area, and pool deck offer more than enough space to relax in between activities, with a sunken fire pit the perfect place to toast the setting sun once the day’s adventures are over. The décor takes its inspiration from the rich landscapes of the Serengeti, with a modern, contemporary style blending effortlessly with organic textures. Elements of antique brass add a warm, vintage feel.

This area is particularly well known for its predators, especially lion, cheetah, and leopard, all of which are seen regularly. A hot-air balloon flight over the surrounding wilderness is also highly recommended.

LOCATION

Location of Oliver’s Camp

Oliver’s is in the remote south-eastern reaches of Tarangire National Park, in northern Tanzania, close to the game-rich Silale Swamps. In April and May, at the end of the annual rains, the landscape is lush and dotted with wildflowers. From August until October, herds of antelope and zebras pass through Tarangire. At this time, the park has the highest concentration of mammals in the country.

Throughout the year, Tarangire is home to large herds of elephants and buffalo and a high concentration of big cats. There are also animals such as wild dogs, kudu, oryx, and gerenuks that won’t be found in the north of Tanzania. And for birders, there are more than 550 species, many of which are attracted to the park’s swamps.

EXPERIENCES

Where the safari comes to you

Oliver’s is low-key and comfortable, reminiscent of the safari camps of old. Sink into one of the sofas in the lounge and dining area with a good book or keep an eye out for passing zebras and elephants from your deck. Meals are served communally in our dining room, after which we gather around the campfire for a nightcap and safari tales.

A typical day on safari at Oliver’s Camp

We head out on game drives or walks first thing in the morning or late in the afternoon when temperatures are cooler. Exact times differ slightly with the seasons, but we aim to get you out and about when the animals are at their most active. If you have booked a private vehicle, you can discuss your schedule with your guide.

Start the day with an early morning wake-up call and a cup of tea or coffee. Have some breakfast before you depart for a game drive or walk or opt to take a picnic with you to enjoy in the bush. By mid-morning, you’ll be back in camp with some time to relax and freshen up before lunch.

It’s siesta time for most of the afternoon when temperatures reach their peak. Take the opportunity to relax with a book or have a nap. Then it’s on to afternoon tea before you depart for a game drive with sundowners. Round off another perfect day in the bush with drinks by the campfire and dinner with good company.

Game drives

Our game drives depart first thing in the morning and late in the afternoon, when the temperatures are cooler and animals are more active. We use open-sided vehicles where everyone has a window seat. They even have power points and fridges, to keep your cameras charged and drinks chilled. Please enquire if you are interested in booking a private vehicle, ideal for those who have special interests. Please note that families with children under 12 must be in a private vehicle.

Tanzania Photographic Safaris

Night drives

At Oliver’s, we have the opportunity to head out into the park at night. You can stay out later if you’ve spotted something interesting or head back into the bush after dinner to spot nocturnal animals. Our vehicles are equipped with powerful spotlights to make sure you don’t miss a thing.

Walking safaris

Our expert guides, accompanied by an armed national park ranger for safety, lead fascinating walking safaris that allow you to stop and examine the small things — ants, termites, dung beetles — often overlooked on a drive. Try your hand at tracking by learning to identify animal spoor and dung. And you might even have the thrilling experience of passing right by some of Tarangire’s larger animals.

Hot-air balloon rides

For romance, drama, and excitement, it doesn’t get better than a sunrise flight in a hot-air balloon. Sail across the plains, spotting wildlife and watching the dawn light illuminate the grasslands below. Hot-air balloon trips are at extra cost and are weather-dependent. Booking is essential.

Family safaris

Oliver’s is a great choice for families. We welcome children over 5 years old and have a family tent that sleeps four (kids under 12 should share with an adult). Note that Oliver’s does not have personal guides or special programs for children, but we will always do our best to welcome your family. Please speak to your agent about hiring a private vehicle.

Meals and refreshments

Our meals are cooked in-camp and served al fresco whenever possible. Start the day with a continental breakfast or bacon and eggs. Lunch is a light buffet and dinner is a three-course sit-down meal. Every week, we host a big barbecue for all guests. If you’d like to spend more time out in the bush, we can prepare a picnic breakfast or lunch.

We support local communities: Our produce is sourced in Arusha and our honey is from a local women’s project.

We can cater to most dietary requirements. Please let us know before your arrival so we can prepare.

What to expect during the year

The best months to visit Tarangire are September and October when the peak season crowds have thinned and the dry conditions are still excellent for wildlife spotting. That said, Oliver’s is a year-round camp, where the wet seasons are great for photography and birding.

Oliver's Camp in Tanzania's Tarangire
Oliver’s Camp in Tanzania’s Tarangire

JANUARY – MARCH

There’s usually a break in the rains in January and February before the long rains begin in March. Migratory birds are in the region and photographic conditions are great, with lush landscapes and clear skies. There are also fewer tourists traveling to the region at this time.

APRIL – JUNE

April sees the most rainfall, at the peak of the long rains. They slow in May with afternoon showers that shouldn’t affect your safari too much. It’s a good time to avoid the crowds and have wildlife viewings to yourself. This is also the cheapest time to travel. June is dry and a great month to visit, just before peak season kicks off.

JULY – SEPTEMBER

It’s peak season in Tarangire, but this doesn’t affect Oliver’s Camp, given its location in a private concession. The dry conditions are perfect for spotting wildlife gathering around waterholes.

OCTOBER – DECEMBER

Why travel at this time

This a great time to travel. Peak season crowds have thinned out and the rates are lower. October is still dry. The short rains, which peak in December, revive the parched landscape, and the migratory birds begin to arrive from the northern hemisphere.
