Asanja has created an intriguing Maasai boma for our guests to experience living in a modern luxurious Maasai boma, consisting of three huts as a single unit room, each hut with its facility, which includes a sitting lounge area, sleeping area, and a bathroom. There are specially designed plunge pools in each of the rooms for you to soak up, unwind, and relax in the bush. Additionally, each unit can have its own dining experience giving you complete privacy.

To add, every year, thousands of Wildebeest take a plunge to cross the glittering waters of the Grumeti River. The River is well known for its population of hippos and the Gigantic Nice Crocodiles. The Lush Riparian forest that shades the river is home to the Rare Colobus Monkeys. Asanja Grumeti is well hidden amongst the open woodlands of the Nyasarori Plains, famous for large herds of elephants and a good concentration of wildlife.

Every month is different…

Nature is full of surprises, this year the rainy season has been longer than usual and that sets the balance for everything else in Tanzania.

But in general, this is how it goes:

December

January

February

The three months of December, January, and February make up the Green Season. Everything grows and flourishes; it’s also called the calving season as all the young are born. A visit during this time holds a high chance of catching a glimpse of a baby giraffe being born, you might see a baby elephant, but you’ve more than a good chance of seeing lion cubs.

This is nature as it was intended, but do keep in mind, the lurking predator belongs here too.

For birdwatchers, this is the ideal time, especially on and around Lake Manyara. It’s hot at this time of the year and the temperature hovers more or less around 30oc.

We’re looking forward to welcoming you into the wilderness of Tanzania

On a walking safari, you have the chance to see nature in a completely different way than from a vehicle. It is a step-by-step discovery of the Serengeti.

Now that we have established two great ways to explore Serengeti, this one is for the brave and adventurous. Only 25% of Serengeti is open to tourism by going around in cars, which leaves 75% of the unseen territory. The way to explore these areas is on foot.

If you love camping and backpacking, read along! You can either have a base camp and explore the surroundings around this, have a moving base with a crew to help move and set up, or go on a full-out adventure and carry on with the minimum to survive. It is one of the best ways to feel one with nature!

Location of Usangu Expedition Camp

The Usangu Wetland features a permanent water source in its centre, the Ihefu Swamp, surrounded by grassy marshlands and floodplains. During the dry season, only the Ihefu Swamp offers water but, as the rainy season develops, the wetland expands to cover an enormous area. On the outer limits of the wet season high-water mark, the miombo forest thrives and provides the perfectly shaded location for Usangu Expedition Camp.

The Usangu Wetland is an essential feature to the Ruaha-Rungwa ecosystem, with major implications for ecosystems thousands of kilometres away from the wetland itself. Its features are unique and under the proper conditions and health, the biodiversity of species is undeniably a treasure trove. Herds of roan and sable roam the vast wetland, and wild dogs run wide along rivers.

Hundreds of ostrich congregate in a way that is not often seen in other places in Africa. Thousands of migratory bird species pass through the wetland as well as unidentified amphibians, still waiting to be discovered.

Ruaha’s wildlife is renowned throughout East Africa and we aim to provide the best opportunities — from game drives to walking safaris — for all kinds of animal sightings. Explore this little-known area within Ruaha: go boating through the waterways, and walk the wide-open grasslands.

Game drives

The best times to depart on a game drive are early morning and late afternoon to avoid the midday heat when animals are less active. With your private vehicle and guide, you have the flexibility to explore any (accessible) area of the Usangu wetlands. Usangu has five biozones and offers many different habitat types that are waiting to be explored. Our up-cycled Land Rovers have been re-built from the ground up and are powered by green alcohol fuel (ethanol). This five-seater, safari vehicle offers unobstructed views — built for comfort, bush driving and remarkable off-road capability.

Night drives

See a different side of Usangu with a night drive. It’s a special opportunity to spot shy, nocturnal animals and the those that prey on them. With the aid of your knowledgeable guide, keep your eyes out for leopard, genet, serval, honey badger, civet and African wildcats on the hunt; as well as bush babies, mongoose, bat-eared fox, nightjars and owls going about their business. Don’t forget to take a moment to a gaze up at the breath-taking night sky.

Boating safaris

The wetland area and the intricate waterways that swell and contract throughout the season create a variety of conditions for boating. Our swamp boat is designed for these marsh-like conditions, offering the opportunity to explore the wetland narrow waterways year-round. Elephant are regularly seen along the shallows, and the birdlife is fantastic.

Family safaris

We welcome families with children over 12 years old. If the camp is booked on an exclusive use basis, younger children can be accommodated, but participation in walking activities and canoeing will not be permitted.

Walking safaris

Walking safaris give you the opportunity to immerse yourself in nature, away from the noise of the land cruiser and closer to the ground to observe the smaller and less obvious parts of the African wilderness. This is a completely different way to experience the bush, encouraging your senses to engage as you spot tiny but fascinating creatures you’d never see from the vehicle.

WHEN TO GO

What to expect during the year

Usangu is open from June to November, when it’s hot and dry. During this time, the Usangu wetlands recede, and the surrounding grasslands dry out into wide open spaces ideal for walking. The rains that fall from November until April transform the landscape, making it green and lush but also creating logistical problems as the road networks become water-logged and the rising floodplains limit land-based activities.

ABOUT JABALI RIDGE

A landscape of sun-bleached plains, mighty baobabs and hardy shrubs, Ruaha is home to large numbers of lion, elephant, buffalo and even endangered African wild dogs. A typical day on safari at Jabali Ridge

We head out for a game drive first thing in the morning and again late in the afternoon, when it’s cooler and the animals are active. Times differ slightly with the seasons. A typical day starts off with an early wake-up call and tea or coffee. Head off on your first game drive of the day after breakfast, or have it packed to take with you as a picnic. Arrive back at camp in time to freshen up before sitting down to lunch. If you have a private vehicle, you can plan your day with your guide. Mid-afternoon is time for a rest. Read a book, take a dip in the pool or visit the spa. Afterward, enjoy afternoon tea and then an evening game drive or walk with sundowners. End the day with a drink at the bar and a leisurely dinner under the stars.

Location of Jabali Ridge

Jabali Ridge is perched on a rocky kopje with views across the Ruaha savannah stretching all the way to the Mwagusi River. Ruaha National Park is one of the largest national parks in Tanzania, located in the centre of the country. It forms a transitional point between the landscapes of East and Southern Africa, with its golden plains of sun-bleached grass and ancient baobab trees.

The greater Ruaha area is thought to be home to one-tenth of the entire world’s wild lion population, with large prides roaming the plains. Cheetah, leopard and packs of wild dog are seen hunting here too. Vistors can also spot greater and lesser kudu, sable and roan antelope, elephants, giraffes, bat-eared foxes and some of the 570 bird species.

Meals and refreshments

Everything at Jabali is homemade, from fresh breads and cakes to salads and ice creams. We can prepare a picnic breakfast to have during your game drive or enjoy a leisurely cooked brunch back at camp. Lunch is a light meal in the dining area and in the evening we serve a delicious, gourmet three-course dinner under the stars. Please let us know of any dietary requirements ahead of your arrival and we’ll be happy to cater to your needs.

What to expect during the year

The best game viewing in Ruaha is from June to November when it’s hot and dry. The rains that fall from November until April transform the landscape, making it perfect for photography and birding. Jabali Ridge closes from mid-March until the end of May when the park is difficult to traverse.

JANUARY – MARCH

Why travel at this time

The landscape is lush and healthy and the air clear of haze, making for excellent photography conditions. There are fewer tourists in the area and plenty of breaks in the rain to explore the park. The migratory birds are in Ruaha at this time and elephants have arrived in great numbers.

APRIL – JUNE

Camp closed

Jabali Ridge is closed from mid-March until the end of May. In June, the lodge reopens when the park has dried up and the temperature has dropped slightly.

JULY – SEPTEMBER

Why travel at this time

The vast wilderness shimmers with heat through the dry season. This is the best time for spotting animals as they gather around the waterholes.

OCTOBER – DECEMBER

Why travel at this time

October is still a dry month before the November rains bring relief to the parched land, transforming the grasslands and flooding the rivers. The migratory birds begin to arrive from the Northern Hemisphere and big herds of elephants move into the newly lush park.

Zuri Zanzibar

Nungwi,is a large beach located in the far northern end of the island of Zanzibar. Nungwi is the second largest settlement on the island. It is situated in the Unguja North Region. It is about 35 miles (56 km) north of Zanzibar Town on the Nungwi Peninsula, about an hour drive from Stone Town. To the south Nungwi shares a border with the neighboring Matemwe. Nungwi was traditionally a fishing village and dhow-building center, but is now a popular tourist destination, and for instance recognized in CNN’s list of “100 best beaches of the world” in 2014. West Nungwi has changed a lot since the 1990s and is now a popular tourist destination with numerous resorts, restaurants, bars, stores, and Nungwi is where Zuri zanzibar situated.

Zuri Zanzibar offers a completely unique experience in Zanzibar for anyone that wants to try something off the beaten African tracks; a place that allows guests a feeling of peace and tranquility.

Zuri Zanzibar
Zuri Zanzibar

ZURI” MEANS “BEAUTIFUL” IN SWAHILI, WHICH IS THE LANGUAGE OF THE ISLAND OF ZANZIBAR. AND THAT IS PRECISELY THE FEELING WE WANT YOU TO EXPERIENCE IN OUR 12 HECTARE MICRO-UNIVERSE. WHEN THINKING HOW BEST TO EVOKE THE BEAUTY OF ZURI TO YOU SENSUALLY, WE FOCUSED METICULOUSLY ON THREE MAIN AREAS:

THE BEACH was the reason why I bought the land many years ago. Unlike most Zanzibar beaches where one must walk 500m to swim at low tide, our beach, settled in the large lagoon, is always perfect. I have travelled the world and stayed in the most exclusive sea-front properties, but I still consider Zuri’s beach as one of the best on Earth. It is not just the white sand and the incredible color of the turquoise Indian Ocean, but also the local way of life, which is so cheerful and optimistic. When you see the dhows (the traditional wooden sailing boats) at a distance during the spectacular sunsets, you do not need to practice mindfulness or meditation training to enjoy the present moment and understand the power of now.

Zuri Zanzibar
Zuri Zanzibar

THE HOTEL is not made up of rooms; just villas, and bungalows. Each separated from one another to attain absolute privacy, and all of them outfitted with outdoor showers and large terraces. The size of our plot could easily accommodate twice as many houses, but we decided to build only 56 of them. Nestled on a west-facing slope, most of the units enjoy direct sea-views. And our ceilings reach for the sky: African-style roofing delivers a breathtaking cathedral-like feeling over your bed and cannot be compared to anything you would find in busy Western cities. On the other hand, being so far away from civilization, we did not want to compromise the quality of your connection with the rest of the world, which is why we have built our own dedicated fast internet line to the mainland – the only hotel in Zanzibar to date!

Zuri Zanzibar
Zuri Zanzibar

THE GARDEN is the icing on the cake. I do not mean the private spice garden covering a quarter of our land – the only one of its kind in the area. I mean that Zuri itself IS the garden. All the villas and bungalows are just part of an enormous tropical park which you can enjoy by walking through and investigating. Hundreds of gardeners and landscape designers needed more than two years to select all the trees and flowers, in which you can bask. The result is an enormous tribute to the pinnacle of Zanzibar and its rich historical legacy.

Today, when more and more things tend to feel and taste the same, it is not an overstatement to say that Zanzibar is different. Located just on the Equator, the colours are more intense, more saturated, more vibrant. And, for some reason, the time runs differently as well! In this environment, it is so easy to forget our daily routines, to rouse our dormant imagination, and to perceive life from a new angle. Stop “doing” and start “being”. Because, ultimately, – we are human beings, not human doings! And it all began in Africa 🙂
