Lake Nakuru National Park

Lake Nakuru National Park, in Central Kenya, is famous for its huge flocks of pink flamingos. The birds throng on Lake Nakuru itself, one of the Rift Valley soda lakes that covers almost a third of the park’s area.

The Lake Nakuru National Park  was established in 1961, and more than 450 species of birds have been recorded here, as well as a rich diversity of other wildlife. Lions, leopards, warthogs, waterbucks, pythons, and white rhinos are just some of the animals you might see, and the landscapes range from sweeping grasslands bordering the lake to rocky cliffs and woodland.

The park also protects the largest euphorbia candelabrum forest in Africa. These tall, branching succulents are endemic to the region and provide a bold textural element to the arid landscapes.

The best time to visit Lake Nakuru  is during the seasons. June to March is the long dry season, and January to March is the short dry season. During the seasons, many of the smaller watering holes dry up, causing animals to gather at Lake Nakuru for water.

Lake Nakuru National Park

Lake Nakuru National Park is Kenya’s second most popular national park after Masai Mara and it is easy to see why. Close to Nairobi and relatively compact it has a vast lake at its heart drawing a massive quantity of birdlife and all the big game animals you’d hope for. Lake Nakuru is one of the best places to see Rhino in Kenya and Giraffe, Buffaloes, Zebras and antelope are all easy to spot. The big draw are the huge flocks of flamingos that are often found in the shallows.

The wildlife in Lake Nakuru National Park

Lake Nakuru National Park  plays host to a fantastic variety of game and good sightings are virtually guaranteed. What Lake Nakuru National Park has that the other major parks don’t have is flamingos. The shore-line is often thick with pink flamingos and pelicans fishing the shallows. The only major wildlife exceptions in the park are crocodiles and elephants. Highlights of Lake Nakuru’s wildlife include a large number of Rothschild giraffe, lions, black and white rhino, hippo and large flocks of flamingos and pelicans.

The Habitat in Lake Nakuru National Park

Lake Nakuru plays host to a variety of terrain. The soda lake provides shallows, mud flats and swamp whilst the surrounds provides some classical African Acacia woodlands interspersed with grasslands. To the West of the park lies a cliff which plays host to bush and scrub and troops of troublesome baboons. There are some fantastic lookouts atop the cliff over the lake, just keep a tight hold on your camera as the Baboons have been known to take them.

How to fit Lake Nakuru into your Kenya Holiday?

Lake Nakuru is in the Rift Valley around 2 hours drive from Nairobi. It falls on route for anybody heading to Masai Mara or the Mount Kenya region. Near bye to Lake Nakuru National Park  are Lake Elimentatai (hot springs), Lake Naivasha (hippos) and Hell’s Gate (walking or cycling amidst zebras, antelope, buffalo and giraffe) and many visitors spend 2 or three days in the area. Typically Lake Nakuru will warrant one overnight stay and a half days game drive.

When is the best time of year to visit Lake Nakuru?

The Park  is a great year round destination:

Usangu Expedition Camp

Location of Usangu Expedition Camp

The Usangu Wetland features a permanent water source in its centre, the Ihefu Swamp, surrounded by grassy marshlands and floodplains. During the dry season, only the Ihefu Swamp offers water but, as the rainy season develops, the wetland expands to cover an enormous area. On the outer limits of the wet season high-water mark, the miombo forest thrives and provides the perfectly shaded location for Usangu Expedition Camp.

The Usangu Wetland is an essential feature to the Ruaha-Rungwa ecosystem, with major implications for ecosystems thousands of kilometres away from the wetland itself. Its features are unique and under the proper conditions and health, the biodiversity of species is undeniably a treasure trove. Herds of roan and sable roam the vast wetland, and wild dogs run wide along rivers.

Hundreds of ostrich congregate in a way that is not often seen in other places in Africa. Thousands of migratory bird species pass through the wetland as well as unidentified amphibians, still waiting to be discovered.

EXPERIENCES:

Ruaha’s wildlife is renowned throughout East Africa and we aim to provide the best opportunities — from game drives to walking safaris — for all kinds of animal sightings. Explore this little-known area within Ruaha: go boating through the waterways, and walk the wide-open grasslands.

Game drives

The best times to depart on a game drive are early morning and late afternoon to avoid the midday heat when animals are less active. With your private vehicle and guide, you have the flexibility to explore any (accessible) area of the Usangu wetlands. Usangu has five biozones and offers many different habitat types that are waiting to be explored. Our up-cycled Land Rovers have been re-built from the ground up and are powered by green alcohol fuel (ethanol). This five-seater, safari vehicle offers unobstructed views — built for comfort, bush driving and remarkable off-road capability.

Night drives

See a different side of Usangu with a night drive. It’s a special opportunity to spot shy, nocturnal animals and the those that prey on them. With the aid of your knowledgeable guide, keep your eyes out for leopard, genet, serval, honey badger, civet and African wildcats on the hunt; as well as bush babies, mongoose, bat-eared fox, nightjars and owls going about their business. Don’t forget to take a moment to a gaze up at the breath-taking night sky.

Boating safaris

The wetland area and the intricate waterways that swell and contract throughout the season create a variety of conditions for boating. Our swamp boat is designed for these marsh-like conditions, offering the opportunity to explore the wetland narrow waterways year-round. Elephant are regularly seen along the shallows, and the birdlife is fantastic.

Walking safaris

Walking safaris give you the opportunity to immerse yourself in nature, away from the noise of the land cruiser and closer to the ground to observe the smaller and less obvious parts of the African wilderness. This is a completely different way to experience the bush, encouraging your senses to engage as you spot tiny but fascinating creatures you’d never see from the vehicle.

WHEN TO GO

What to expect during the year

Usangu is open from June to November, when it’s hot and dry. During this time, the Usangu wetlands recede, and the surrounding grasslands dry out into wide open spaces ideal for walking. The rains that fall from November until April transform the landscape, making it green and lush but also creating logistical problems as the road networks become water-logged and the rising floodplains limit land-based activities.

Location of Jabali Ridge

Jabali Ridge is perched on a rocky kopje with views across the Ruaha savannah stretching all the way to the Mwagusi River. Ruaha National Park is one of the largest national parks in Tanzania, located in the centre of the country. It forms a transitional point between the landscapes of East and Southern Africa, with its golden plains of sun-bleached grass and ancient baobab trees.

The greater Ruaha area is thought to be home to one-tenth of the entire world’s wild lion population, with large prides roaming the plains. Cheetah, leopard and packs of wild dog are seen hunting here too. Vistors can also spot greater and lesser kudu, sable and roan antelope, elephants, giraffes, bat-eared foxes and some of the 570 bird species.

What to expect during the year

The best game viewing in Ruaha is from June to November when it’s hot and dry. The rains that fall from November until April transform the landscape, making it perfect for photography and birding. Jabali Ridge closes from mid-March until the end of May when the park is difficult to traverse.

JANUARY – MARCH

Why travel at this time

The landscape is lush and healthy and the air clear of haze, making for excellent photography conditions. There are fewer tourists in the area and plenty of breaks in the rain to explore the park. The migratory birds are in Ruaha at this time and elephants have arrived in great numbers.

APRIL – JUNE

Camp closed

Jabali Ridge is closed from mid-March until the end of May. In June, the lodge reopens when the park has dried up and the temperature has dropped slightly.

JULY – SEPTEMBER

Why travel at this time

The vast wilderness shimmers with heat through the dry season. This is the best time for spotting animals as they gather around the waterholes.

OCTOBER – DECEMBER

Why travel at this time

October is still a dry month before the November rains bring relief to the parched land, transforming the grasslands and flooding the rivers. The migratory birds begin to arrive from the Northern Hemisphere and big herds of elephants move into the newly lush park.

Zuri Zanzibar

Nungwi,is a large beach located in the far northern end of the island of Zanzibar. Nungwi is the second largest settlement on the island. It is situated in the Unguja North Region. It is about 35 miles (56 km) north of Zanzibar Town on the Nungwi Peninsula, about an hour drive from Stone Town. To the south Nungwi shares a border with the neighboring Matemwe. Nungwi was traditionally a fishing village and dhow-building center, but is now a popular tourist destination, and for instance recognized in CNN’s list of “100 best beaches of the world” in 2014. West Nungwi has changed a lot since the 1990s and is now a popular tourist destination with numerous resorts, restaurants, bars, stores, and Nungwi is where Zuri zanzibar situated.

Zuri Zanzibar offers a completely unique experience in Zanzibar for anyone that wants to try something off the beaten African tracks; a place that allows guests a feeling of peace and tranquility.

Zuri Zanzibar
Zuri Zanzibar

ZURI” MEANS “BEAUTIFUL” IN SWAHILI, WHICH IS THE LANGUAGE OF THE ISLAND OF ZANZIBAR. AND THAT IS PRECISELY THE FEELING WE WANT YOU TO EXPERIENCE IN OUR 12 HECTARE MICRO-UNIVERSE. WHEN THINKING HOW BEST TO EVOKE THE BEAUTY OF ZURI TO YOU SENSUALLY, WE FOCUSED METICULOUSLY ON THREE MAIN AREAS:

THE BEACH was the reason why I bought the land many years ago. Unlike most Zanzibar beaches where one must walk 500m to swim at low tide, our beach, settled in the large lagoon, is always perfect. I have travelled the world and stayed in the most exclusive sea-front properties, but I still consider Zuri’s beach as one of the best on Earth. It is not just the white sand and the incredible color of the turquoise Indian Ocean, but also the local way of life, which is so cheerful and optimistic. When you see the dhows (the traditional wooden sailing boats) at a distance during the spectacular sunsets, you do not need to practice mindfulness or meditation training to enjoy the present moment and understand the power of now.

Zuri Zanzibar
Zuri Zanzibar

THE HOTEL is not made up of rooms; just villas, and bungalows. Each separated from one another to attain absolute privacy, and all of them outfitted with outdoor showers and large terraces. The size of our plot could easily accommodate twice as many houses, but we decided to build only 56 of them. Nestled on a west-facing slope, most of the units enjoy direct sea-views. And our ceilings reach for the sky: African-style roofing delivers a breathtaking cathedral-like feeling over your bed and cannot be compared to anything you would find in busy Western cities. On the other hand, being so far away from civilization, we did not want to compromise the quality of your connection with the rest of the world, which is why we have built our own dedicated fast internet line to the mainland – the only hotel in Zanzibar to date!

Zuri Zanzibar
Zuri Zanzibar

THE GARDEN is the icing on the cake. I do not mean the private spice garden covering a quarter of our land – the only one of its kind in the area. I mean that Zuri itself IS the garden. All the villas and bungalows are just part of an enormous tropical park which you can enjoy by walking through and investigating. Hundreds of gardeners and landscape designers needed more than two years to select all the trees and flowers, in which you can bask. The result is an enormous tribute to the pinnacle of Zanzibar and its rich historical legacy.

Today, when more and more things tend to feel and taste the same, it is not an overstatement to say that Zanzibar is different. Located just on the Equator, the colours are more intense, more saturated, more vibrant. And, for some reason, the time runs differently as well! In this environment, it is so easy to forget our daily routines, to rouse our dormant imagination, and to perceive life from a new angle. Stop “doing” and start “being”. Because, ultimately, – we are human beings, not human doings! And it all began in Africa 🙂

Boma visit

The Maasai are one of the main tribes in this part of Africa, known for maintaining their traditional shepherding lifestyle. The Maasai people colonized the area thanks to their traditional way of life, which allowed them to coexist with the wildlife and the environment peacefully. Today, more than 100.000 Maasai live in the Ngorongoro Reservation Area. You will be able to visit a traditional Maasai house, the boma, where you will witness and participate in their cultural activities, such as the dance, house making, handcrafted ornaments, and food cooking.

Dunia Camp

Location of Dunia Camp

Dunia is in the central Serengeti, part of Tanzania’s famous Serengeti National Park, surrounded by golden savannah. Twice per year, this area sees millions of wildebeest, zebras and gazelles passing through on their constant migration around the Serengeti and Kenya’s Masai Mara. If you’re lucky, you won’t even need to leave camp to watch the vast herds grazing.

The camp is ideally placed to explore three excellent game viewing areas: Seronera, the Moru Kopjes and the southern Serengeti plains. The Seronera River is a gathering place for lots of wildlife, providing ample opportunity for spotting predators in action. The Moru Kopjes are a cluster of old granite boulders, favoured by big cats that like to use them as lookout points. You might even spot the rare black rhino. The southern plains are covered in lush grass between December and May, perfect for calving wildebeest.

Where the safari comes to you

The safari comes right to Dunia, with the migrating wildebeest herds regularly passing the camp. Outside of the migration, there’s plenty more opportunity for wildlife spotting, too. During downtime, sink into a leather armchair with a cold drink in the open-sided dining tent and scan the sun-bleached plains for movement or get lost in a great book before retiring to your tent for an afternoon snooze.

EXPERIENCES

A typical day on safari at Dunia Camp

We start the day early to find animals when they are most active, heading out on safari around dawn and again at dusk. Timing varies according to the season, but guests can expect the following from typical day on safari.

Start your day bright and early with a wake-up call and tea or coffee. Enjoy breakfast before departure for your morning game drive (or have it packed as a picnic to take with you). You’ll arrive back in camp mid-morning, with a chance to freshen up before lunch.

After a leisurely lunch, enjoy siesta. Read a book or just relax and enjoy the views from your private viewing deck. Refuel with afternoon tea and then depart for your afternoon/evening game drive with sundowners. You’ll be back in time for drinks at the bar and dinner – the perfect chance to unwind after a long day in the bush. If you have a private vehicle, you can plan your day with your guide.

Our vehicles are either open-sided or closed with roof hatches allowing you to stand for a better view. They are all fitted with charging points and fridges, so you can easily spend a whole day on safari.

Serengeti National Park

Hot-air balloon rides

Watch the sunrise as you glide over the Serengeti plains. Whether you’re on a romantic holiday or a special family trip, this is an epic way to start the day. Hot-air balloon rides are at an additional cost and are weather dependent.

Serengeti National Park

Family safaris

The Camp welcomes children over the age of 5 and have a larger family tent with separate bedrooms that can accommodate up to five people. There’s no a specific programme for children at Dunia, but the staff and guides strive to entertain all ages. We may be able to make exceptions to our age limit, so please enquire if you need assistance. Additionally, we may also be able to arrange a private vehicle for your family.

Meals and refreshments

The food at Dunia is prepared on-site by the chefs. During the rainy season, They buy fresh vegetables from the communities around Mugumu and source the rest of our food as locally as possible. Start the morning with a hearty cooked breakfast on the deck overlooking the Serengeti plains. Alternatively, you can eat when you return from your game drive or we’ll pack breakfast for to enjoy in the bush.

Lunch is a light buffet at camp or packed up for those who want to spend a full day out in the bush. A relaxed dinner is served at camp after the evening game drive, or opt to have a bush dinner under the stars.

Dunia is certified by Responsible Tourism Tanzania with the highest level of “Tree”.  This certifies a fully integrated responsible tourism approach embedded within daily operations. Dunia was also recognised by TripAdvisor with a 2020 Travelers’ Choice Award, reflecting that guests thoroughly enjoyed their experience in camp, leaving very favourable reviews throughout 2020.

  • Dunia Camp – An early start to the day with breakfast being served outside

Dunia Camp

Serengeti National Park wildlife

The Serengeti is home to a remarkable number of species, including over 70 big mammals and more than 500 bird species. The main event is the Great Migration, Africa’s second longest land migration, where around 1.5 million wildebeest, 500,000 Thomson’s gazelles and 250,000 zebras travel in an endless cycle around the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem, following the rains. But there’s much more besides the migration herds. You’ll find the Big 5 (lion — numbering around 3,500 — leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo), as well as other predators such as cheetah, spotted hyena and wild dog (the latter mostly in the south). You might also spot hippo in the river, klipspringer, oribi and Coke’s hartebeest, serval (including unusual black melanistic varieties), bat-eared fox and golden jackal. Then there are super-rare animals to look out for, including the aardwolf and ground pangolin.

Conclusion

As you plan your Serengeti adventure, consider Dunia Camp your home away from home. It’s where luxury meets nature, where you can witness the wonders of the wild and immerse yourself in local culture. Your journey to the Serengeti will be incomplete without experiencing the Exploring the Magic of Dunia Camp.

Lemala Nanyukie Lodge

Meaning ‘endless plains’ in the Maasai language, the Serengeti is undoubtedly one of the world’s most celebrated wilderness areas. Lemala Nanyukie is located a 60-minute drive east of the Seronera Airstrip in the park’s central region, and is superbly located with outstanding views across these fascinating ‘endless plains’. The lodge itself sits on a grassy savanna dotted with rocky kopjes and shaded by ancient giant acacia trees.

This area of the Serengeti is crossed by the thrilling wildlife spectacle of the annual wildebeest migration, but also has high-density game-viewing at all times and is well-known for its large concentration of cats, so much so that until recently this area was set aside for scientific research into predators, especially cheetah. As such, Lemala Nanyukie is open year-round.

Entamanu Ngorongoro

Naturally, our take on this wildlife shangri-la is wilder, woolier, and much more absorbed.

Here, we define our own Ngorongoro, off the beaten track, in Maasai territory. Following one of the world’s most stunning private drives, we bring you up to a dizzying edge of elemental Africa with panoramic views spinning forward into the Crater and back to the Serengeti plains. This is much more than a great vantage point for visiting the Crater, this is where we live the Ngorongoro life.

There is surely no truer way to appreciate the magnitude and wonder of the Ngorongoro Crater, than from Entamanu where it’s done entirely on your terms and schedules.

How Entamanu was built

Meaning ‘circle’ in Maa, the language of the Maasai, Entamanu is the perfect name for our understated luxury camp on the Ngorongoro Crater edge. We thought long and hard about how to ‘be’ in this ancient place and were resolute that leave no impact should we ever leave. And we’re proud to say we achieved our goals!

Elemental and wild

Typical. Of all the possible sites encircling this unique wildlife Shangri-la, we pick the wild and woolliest. Following one of the world’s most stunning private drives, we bring you to a soft edge of oxygenated, elemental Africa with heady panoramas spinning forward into the Crater and across the Serengeti Plains.

This is a place to slow down, breathe, feel Ngorongoro’s rhythms under your feet, and look deeper, through Maasai’s eyes.

An unforgettable journey is best taken on foot

Entamanu is the only place in the world where you can see the Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti plains from the same spot. And in our determination to mold your Crater experience a little differently, we highly recommend you take the unique opportunity to walk from Entamanu to Serengeti Safari Camp.

This is surely one of the most dramatic walks in the world with magnificent views across the Serengeti, Olduvai Gorge, and the Gol Mountains as you descend off the back of the Ngorongoro Crater rim and down onto the edge of the Southern Serengeti plains.

Highland walks

These are the unforgettable experiences of Africa which very few get, to have it properly beneath your feet. You’ll be out of the cars with your guide, in the sparkling highland air. Along too, a Maasai scout – showing you his version of the natural world – and an armed ranger to keep you safe.

Crater game drives

Naturally, we’ve found the right spot for a more private experience of this wildlife mecca. Being right on the rim, we have access to the Crater soon after dawn, often first in line avoiding the dreaded mini-buses, to take you to see the outstanding volumes of wildlife: from some of Africa’s last rhinoceros to flamingoes to lovebirds.

Walk the wonder of the world

Start early with coffee before you wend your way along ancient cattle trails through high-altitude meadows, past picturesque Maasai Bomas and Acacia woodlands, revealing stunning views of Lemakarot Mountain as you gradually descend to the endless plains of the Serengeti.

The transition from the montane Crater highlands down to the infinity of the Serengeti plains is a gradual yet dramatic change in landscape, navigated in the company of your Maasai guides whose knowledge of this part of the world is steeped in their DNA.

Lunch on the Crater rim

The ultimate picnic spot overlooking the vast Ngorongoro Crater. Give us the nod ahead of time and we’ll have this ready for your return from your morning game drive. Then after your long and lazy lunch, how about a gentle stroll back into camp for a well-earned rest?

Lunch on the Crater rim
Lunch on the Crater rim

The Ngorongoro Crater offers phenomenal game viewing throughout the year, but particular seasons offer their special highlights.

Entamanu sits on an extraordinary site in the sharp air of the highlands and there’s nothing tame about this location – the high-altitude sun has some real heat, and the wind can be biting and sometimes noisy. We’ve taken up the challenge to create a camp that makes the most of the extraordinary view while providing warmth and shelter from the elements while being entirely removable.

The Crater itself takes on a life of its own when it comes to weather patterns. With an altitudinal range of 960m to 3,648m, its climatic zones range from semi-arid to montane forest, and there is often a remarkable difference between the conditions on either side of the Crater, and particularly between the rim (often cold and foggy in the mornings) and the crater floor which is much hotter and often clear. Temperatures on the rim can drop to around or below freezing so warm clothes are a must throughout the year, and it can get windy at Entamanu, particularly in July and August.

As its little microhabitat, the Crater includes a variety of small ecosystems, a saline lake, swamps, plains, and forests – and all this supports a population of about 25,000 mammals and an impressive number of bird species. Most of the wildlife never leaves the Crater floor and it has a well-earned reputation as one of the most epic wildlife experiences in Africa. It can get busy with vehicles on the Crater floor, but our location on the rim means we can beat most of the crowds onto the Crater floor in the mornings, and retreat to our remote corner of the wilderness to explore on foot or venture further afield to the less famous but equally impressive sites such as Empakai and Ol Moti.
