    LOCATION

    Location of Roho ya Selous

In the heart of Nyerere National Park — the largest reserve in Africa — Roho ya Selous is perfectly positioned for excellent game viewing, close to a key waterway that links Lake Manze to Lake Nzerakera. Here, pods of hippos wallow and fish eagles scan the landscape from their perches. Giraffes wander through the camp on their way to the water and impala graze on the grass around our tents.

Nyerere is a different type of environment to the grassy plains of northern Tanzania. This is a marshy landscape of palm trees, lakes, and rivers and is home to elephants, buffalos, lions, hippos, leopards, and one of the largest populations of wild dogs on the planet. Plus, bird enthusiasts can try and spot the more than 400 recorded bird species, including a good number of Pel’s fishing owls, in the region. Despite the excellent game, there are far fewer visitors here than in the Serengeti, making the safari experience feel much more exclusive.

EXPERIENCES

Simple and stylish

The name Roho ya Selous means ‘heart of the Selous’, and that’s exactly where we are. Balancing adventure with plenty of comforts, the camp offers seasoned travelers an authentic safari experience in Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve).

A typical day on safari at Roho ya Selous

The best time for game viewing is in the cooler early mornings and late afternoons when animals are at their most active. Depending on the season, your day may start slightly earlier or later. If you have booked a private vehicle, please discuss schedule preferences with your guide.

A day at Roho ya Selous starts with an early wake-up call and a cup of tea or coffee. Have some breakfast at camp or have your meal packed to enjoy on your morning game drive. You’ll be back in camp in time for lunch.

The afternoon is time to rest. Read a book, take a dip in the pool, or have a siesta. Refuel with afternoon tea before heading out onto the lake, where you can sip a G&T onboard our boat. Round off the perfect day with drinks around the campfire and a leisurely dinner.

Game drives

We have seven-seater, open-sided game vehicles for exploring further afield in the reserve and getting closer to large herbivores and predators. The vehicles have canvas roofs, power points, and fridges — everything needed to stay comfortable out in the bush for as long as you like.

Walking safaris

Head out on foot for an intimate exploration of the Selous. Stop and examine the tiniest creatures, such as ants and butterflies, and learn about tracking animals using their prints and dung. Plus, there’s the excitement of getting close to large animals as they pass by.

Boating Safari
Boating Safari

Boating

One of the things that separates Nyerere from other major Tanzanian parks is its boating safaris. From a safe distance, float past crocodiles on the sandbanks and hippos in the shallows, watching elephants come down to drink and birds nesting on the islands.

Fishing

Combine a boat safari with a spot of fishing. The rivers hold a good population of tigerfish and various types of catfish.

Family safaris

We warmly welcome families with children over 5 at Roho ya Selous. The ease of access makes the reserve a fuss-free destination. We have a family tent with an enclosed en suite children’s room, ideal for younger kids, and a range of activities to keep the whole family entertained. Please note that guests must be 16 years old to join our walking safaris, but there is no age limit for game drives or boat safaris. Please ask your agent about the option of hiring a private vehicle for your family safari.

Mkomazi National Park is located in northeastern Tanzania on the Kenyan border, in Same District of Kilimanjaro Region  It was established as a game reserve in 1951 and upgraded to a national park in 2006.

Mkomazi National Park is a hidden gem amongst the parks of Tanzania. Located in Northeastern Tanzania below the slopes of the Pare and Usambara Mountains, Mkomazi extends to Tsavo National Park in Kenya and together these two parks form the Greater Tsavo Ecosystem with an area of 43,ooo square kilometers.

Representing one of Tanzania’s most unique ecosystems – Mkomazi National Park is the southernmost extension of the Somali semi-arid belt and the Sahel Biosphere – the biogeographic region linking the Sahara Desert with Central Africa. For this reason, a number of species found in Mkomazi are found nowhere else in Tanzania. Although protected as Mkomazi and Umba Game Reserves since 1951 it was only declared a national park in 2008 when Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA) took over management of this 3,200 square kilometer wilderness.

Mkomazi National Park

Wildlife in Mkomazi

Since Mkomazi was given National Park status it has seen a dramatic reduction in poaching, cattle grazing, fires, and other illegal activities. TANAPA, together with the George Adamson African Wildlife Preservation Trust, has also improved the road network and established several water catchments. In the last few years, game numbers have increased substantially with herds of up to a hundred zebra, eland, elephant, and buffalo being seen. There are many kongoni, giraffes, dik-diks and ostriches, and in the drier areas gerenuk, lesser kudu and beisa oryx. The larger cats are still rare, but with luck, you will encounter serval cat, caracal and wild cat, as well as wild dogs.

Mkomazi National Park

Unique Diversity

Mkomazi National Park is one of the driest areas in Tanzania – in the local Pare language it means “little water” – yet still boasts an incredibly diverse flora and fauna with a high endemic population of species. Of the 1500 plant species identified so far over 50% do not occur anywhere else. And it is a fantastic destination for birdwatchers with over 400 bird species having been recorded, including the endemic Violet Wood-hoopoe, Friedmann’s Lark, the Somali Long-billed Crombec and the Yellow-vented Eremomela.

Mkomazi National Park

BEST TIME TO VISIT MKOMAZI NATIONAL PARK

The Dry season, from June to October, is the best time for general wildlife viewing in the park. However, the park isn’t a prime wildlife viewing destination and the scenery and views of the mountains are at their best in the Wet season, from November to May. This is also the best time to see elephants migrating into the park from Tsavo.

Mkomazi National Park

Conservation

Mkomazi National Park, together with Tsavo West National Park, forms one of the largest and most important protected ecosystems on earth.

TANAPA offers rhino viewing in both its sanctuaries within the park, these are exceptional opportunities to get up close to this highly endangered species.

Lake Masek Tented Lodge

Witness the early morning mist rise on the banks of Lake Masek

From the private terrace of your tent you can observe the wildlife of the area. Many animals visit the lake in search of water and therefore this camp is in a privileged observation point.

Besides, this area is the principle setting of the Great Migration which takes place from December to April and the Big Five visit the area. The camp is set-up every year in a different part of the area, to make sure that you will always have the best place to see this impressive spectacle from your own tent.

In addition, the camp is ecological without losing in comfort and attention. The electricity is generated by solar panels and the water is rain water collected during the rains. All the products used are biodegradables.

Tanzania’s prehistoric Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the Eighth Wonder of the World, has yawned heavenward for millennia. Each has its rock-enclosed balcony, and all enjoy completely uninterrupted views of the volcanic amphitheater far below. Our Ngorongoro Hotel Lodge is a place that feels as ancient as the Crater itself, yet no modern comfort has been spared to bring you the best safari adventure in Africa and one of the most unique travel experiences in the world.
