Lake Mburo National Park is one of Uganda’s most accessible and compact national parks, located in the western part of the country between Kampala and Mbarara. The park is characterized by rolling savannah, acacia woodlands, seasonal wetlands, and a chain of lakes that support rich biodiversity. Unlike many other parks in the region, Lake Mburo is especially known for its high concentration of plains game, including zebras, impalas (from which Kampala derives its name), elands, topis, and buffaloes. Its varied habitats make it an excellent destination for travelers seeking a relaxed safari experience with scenic landscapes and frequent wildlife sightings.
The park offers a range of unique safari activities that set it apart from other Ugandan parks. Visitors can enjoy traditional game drives, guided walking safaris, horseback riding among wildlife, and boat cruises on Lake Mburo, which provide close encounters with hippos, crocodiles, and a wide variety of water birds. Lake Mburo National Park is also a birdwatcher’s haven, with over 350 recorded bird species. Its proximity to major routes makes it an ideal stopover before or after exploring Uganda’s southwestern safari circuit.
