Ilboru Safari Lodge

Ilboru Safari Lodge

Nestled on the lower slopes of the majestic Mount Meru, the Ilboru Safari Lodge is popular with mountain climbers and safari travellers in northern Tanzania. Ideally located between the northern safari circuit and Mount Kilimanjaro, the beautiful Swahili sanctuary is set on a five-acre plot tucked away beneath ancient trees on the outskirts of Arusha town. The lodge features thirty-eight guest rooms, comprising single, double, twin, triple, and family rooms. Four rooms are in the main building, close to the pool and other facilities, each with a balcony overlooking the garden. The rest of the rooms are double cottages throughout the lushly landscaped grounds.

Mount Meru

Powered by a final rush of adrenaline, you scramble to the snow-capped summit of the fifth-tallest mountain in Africa. In the distance, beyond the clouds and the towering silhouette of Kilimanjaro, you can see the radiant glow of the rising sun.

Where is Mount Meru located?

Mount Meru is located in north-eastern Tanzania. It is one of Africa’s best trekking routes due to the incredible views from its crater.

Like Kilimanjaro, Meru is an active volcano, but its last minor eruption was over a century ago, in 1910. Millions of years ago, a significant eruption blew off the top of the volcano, giving it a horseshoe shape. Its summit collapsed around 7,800 years ago, and much of the volcano’s bulk was lost.

German explorers first summited it in the early 20th century while colonizing East Africa. However, whether Carl Uhlig led the first successful expedition in 1901 or Fritz Jaeger in 1904 is disputed.

Mount Meru in Tanzania is sometimes confused with Meru Peak in the Himalayas. However, Mount Meru is safer and offers an attainable challenge for trekking enthusiasts.
