The Northern Serengeti: A Premier Safari Destination

The Great Migration and Thrilling Game Viewing

The northern Serengeti is renowned as one of Africa’s premier safari destinations, especially from mid-June to November. During this period, the great herds of wildebeest converge on the Mara River, preparing for the dramatic river crossing. Here, you’ll witness the thrilling spectacle of wildebeest braving the crocodile-infested waters and hungry predators on the opposite bank. This migration transforms the northern Serengeti into a vibrant hub of activity, offering dramatic and exciting game viewing experiences.

Accommodation and Seasonal Highlights

Sayari, ideally located near the Tanzanian side of the Mara River, provides exceptional accommodation during this bustling season. Enjoy the prime location as the wildebeest thunder across the river, creating unforgettable moments.

Post-Migration Tranquility

When the migrating herds return south, the northern Serengeti offers a serene environment with abundant wildlife. The vast plains become a quieter sanctuary where you can frequently spot lions, cheetahs, and other predators. Elephants, rhinos, and leopards often roam the riverine forests, while bird enthusiasts can enjoy sightings of European migrant species that visit during this season.

What to expect during the year

The Serengeti is a year-round destination with great wildlife-viewing opportunities during the dry and wet seasons. Most tourists arrive in July and August for the famous wildebeest migration herds in the northern Serengeti that can usually be seen until October. With relatively dry conditions and fewer crowds, January, February, September, and October are great months to travel.

JANUARY – MARCH

There are the rains over January and February before the long rains begin in March. The migratory birds are in the region, and photographic conditions are perfect, with lush grasses and clear skies. There are fewer tourists in the north at this time.

APRIL – JUNE

Sayari is closed throughout April and May. June is dry and a good time to travel, just before peak season. This is when the wildebeest herds begin moving into the north.

 JULY – SEPTEMBER

This is the peak season for travellers who want to see the wildebeest herds gathering around the Mara River, which they must cross to reach Kenya’s MasKenya. The river crossings occur throughout this period, though seeing one is not guaranteed. The dry season is a beautiful time to travel, and the conditions are perfect for spotting wildlife.

 OCTOBER – DECEMBER

The Serengeti crowds thin out from late September as the wildebeest herds go southward. They see the final river crossings in October as the herds travel back to the Serengeti from the Mara. The short rains replenish the landscape, and the migratory birds begin to arrive from Europe and Asia.

Guest tent – 2 pax

(11 ROOMS)

The remote and starkly beautiful landscape of the Northern Serengeti inspired the design of Sayari’s 15 tented suits, a subtle mirror of the iconic flat-topped volcanic Turner Hill to the north. Inside, the rich mahogany floors and delicate tones of sand, stone, and acacia reflect the hues and textures of the natural terrain. Each spacious suite has a king-sized bed (twin beds available) with fine linens and safari-chic decor to offset the wilderness beyond the canvas walls. The en-suite bathrooms with a walk-in shower and egg-shaped bathtub overlook the Northern Serengeti plains, as do the beautiful private verandas outside.

Family tent – 4 pax

(1 ROOM)

One of Sayari’s 15 tented suites is a spacious, two-bedroom family suite suitable for two adults and three children under 16. The main bedroom is similar to the other tents and has all the amenities you would expect: a king-sized bed, a walk-in shower, a huge bathtub with stunning views of the northern Serengeti, and a spacious private veranda. The main bedroom is linked to the children’s room by a raised platform with safety railings. This second bedroom has three single beds and access to a spacious en-suite bathroom with a walk-in shower. The second bedroom also has a private veranda, so no one misses out on fabulous wilderness views.
