Rare Coexistence of Rhino Sanctuary and Wild Dogs
Mkomazi National Park is renowned for its dedicated efforts in rhino conservation. The park is home to a secure rhino sanctuary, where endangered black rhinos are protected and bred as part of global efforts to save this iconic species. Visitors to the sanctuary can learn about the challenges and triumphs of rhino conservation while observing these magnificent animals in a safe and natural environment.
Spanning an area of over 3,200 square kilometers (1,235 square miles), Mkomazi’s terrain features rugged hills, open savannahs, and striking acacia woodlands. The park’s name, derived from the Pare language, means “water scarce,” reflecting its semi-arid nature. Despite this, the landscape offers breathtaking views of Mount Kilimanjaro and the Usambara Mountains in the distance, making it a visual feast for nature enthusiasts.
Mkomazi is home to a wide array of wildlife, including giraffes, zebras, elands, and oryx, which thrive in its semi-arid environment. Additionally, it is one of the few places in Tanzania where you can see the endangered African wild dog. Visitors can also spot predators like lions, leopards, and cheetahs, making Mkomazi a remarkable destination for wildlife viewing.
With over 450 bird species recorded, Mkomazi is a haven for bird enthusiasts. From striking kori bustards to colorful bee-eaters and endemic species such as the violet wood hoopoe, the park’s diverse birdlife adds to its natural charm. Birdwatching is especially rewarding during the early mornings and late afternoons.
Mkomazi offers a peaceful alternative to the busier parks in Tanzania. Its remote location and lesser-known status make it ideal for those seeking a quiet, off-the-beaten-path safari experience. Visitors can explore the park through guided game drives or walking safaris, enjoying the tranquility and solitude of this unspoiled wilderness.
Located near the Pare and Usambara Mountains, Mkomazi provides an excellent opportunity to combine wildlife adventures with cultural experiences. Visitors can explore nearby traditional villages, engage with local communities, and learn about the unique culture and heritage of the Pare and Sambaa people.
Mkomazi National Park offers one of Tanzania’s most captivating and immersive safari experiences. Its unique combination of rugged hills, vast savannahs, and semi-arid landscapes creates a haven for wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers. Nestled beneath the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro and the Usambara Mountains, the park’s untamed beauty provides a dramatic and unforgettable backdrop for adventure. One of my most cherished moments was witnessing the majestic black rhinos in the sanctuary, a symbol of the park’s significant conservation efforts, as they moved through the sun-drenched plains, embodying the essence of this wild space.

The best time to visit Mkomazi National Park depends on what you want to experience. The dry season, from June to October, is ideal for wildlife viewing as animals gather around water sources, making them easier to spot. The weather is also more comfortable during this period, with less rainfall and pleasant temperatures. This is the prime time for game drives, and it’s when you’re most likely to see the park’s unique wildlife, including giraffes, rhinos, and African wild dogs.

We wanted to go on a safari for our honeymoon but after speaking to many uk based companies we was left disheartened with the lack on options they provided for itinerary and accommodation. So we done a lot of research online and found Raymond at Great Image Expedition, nothing was to much trouble everything was completely bespoke and exactly how we dream it to be. There was no pressure what so ever and we was completely confident with paying for our trip with a Tanzania based company. Our guides Godlistern & Simba was extremely friendly and knowledgeable and very respectful of the animals and their country. I would 1000% recommend this company for your next safari in Tanzania!Posted on Tripadvisor![]()

Great Image Expedition is the best local talent Great Image Expedition isn’t just another tour company, it’s what a Tanzania experience should be. What makes them stand out is their local connection. They use local guides and experts who actually know Tanzania, its people, its wildlife, and its culture. That local knowledge creates experiences you simply can’t get from a company operating from the outside. From incredible safari moments to authentic cultural experiences, every detail felt personal, genuine, and thoughtfully planned. Their team didn’t just show us Tanzania, they connected us to Tanzania. If you want luxury, adventure, authenticity, and experiences that go beyond the typical tourist itinerary, Great Image Expedition is the company to book.Posted on Tripadvisor![]()

Must visit tribe in Tanzania Anyone who visits Tanzania should visit Hadzabe tribe to at least get a glimpse of what life should have been for the hunter gatherers during human evolution. We took this trip as a part of our tour package with Serengeti Wakanda tour operator. I will break down the experience to elaborate better. 1. Start early - Since we visited a true nomadic group, our guide asked us to go as early as possible before the men leave on hunts. We left Ngorongoro park by 5;50 AM and reached the tribe around 9:30 AM (we stopped in the jungle before visiting the tribe and had a packed breakfast). 2. Road - Once you leave the main road, then you are in the real bush. Since there is very less traffic to visit these tribes, the jungle tract to get to the tribe is very rough. 3. Guide - We had to pickup a local guide since our guide George from Serengeti Wekanda tours did not speak Hadzabe language. This guide Gunan is from a tribe called Datoga who trade with Hadzabe. You should visit that tribe as well and will write about Datoga tribe separately. Gunan the Datoga guide spoke the best English out of all the folks I met in Tanzania. He is a very young man, very knowledgeable about the tribes. Get Gunan if you plan to visit Hadzabe tribe. 4. Hadzabe tribe - From what I heard from Gunan, the Hadzabe population is around 700. The group we visited had about 30+. They had moved to this location only two days ago. Their tents were still getting built by the time we visited. The wood and other plant parts were still getting fixed. They have an interesting language that has click sounds interspersed with normal words. First we met the males who had done a hunt of a warthog the day before. They showed the different arrows for different animals. The poison laced arrows and the arrows for monkeys were quite interesting. All of the metal arrow heads were made by Datoga tribe. Once the men told us how they hunt, then we met the women and the kids. They did a tribal dance there. 5. Hunting with the Hadzabe - we were told that they will take us on a hunt which may take about two hours. Since we had to get back to catch our flights we only went with them to shoot some arrows in their training place. However, I think it may not be real to do a hunt in two hours. It may be to give some excitement to the visitors. Hadzabe have long hunts that takes 2-3 days where they go to hunt big animals. The shorter hunts for tourists may be only to get Baboons or smaller animals in the close by areas. 6. Giving money - Though they maintain a hunter gatherer lifestyle, they all ask for money. You should give the money to the ladies and ask them to share with the group. We did the mistake of giving to men and then the women came. Gunan the guide later said that we should have given to women. They actually need the money to buy arrowheads from Datoga tribe who are the blacksmiths. 7. Time to spend - We spent about 45 minutes there. The drive to the tribe is what consumes most of the time. Overall, it was a great experience.Posted on Google![]()

I want to share something very special. We just returned from a once‑in‑a‑lifetime journey through Arusha, the Serengeti, Stone Town, and Zanzibar, beautifully curated by Raymond, the owner of Great Image Expedition. I gave Raymond a huge challenge: to design a meaningful trip that celebrated all of our birthdays, our wedding anniversary, and a deeply personal return to Zanzibar. He handled every detail with grace, patience, and so much heart. Even when we had a few unexpected flight mishaps (completely outside of his control), Raymond stayed calm, flexible, and supportive, adjusting plans seamlessly and making sure we were always taken care of. He also added experiences that made the trip unforgettable for our family. We visited Chemka Hot Springs, which was perfect for our son — he enjoyed the water so much. In Zanzibar, Raymond arranged jetskis, which were a huge hit, and in Stone Town he organized a special walking tour plus a visit to a nearby local village. Every experience felt unique, thoughtful, and personal. And then… the hot air balloon ride over the Serengeti. This was truly magical — sunrise, silence, the plains stretching forever. It was one of the most breathtaking experiences of our lives. Raymond also arranged a bush birthday celebration for us, which was so special and so beautifully done. It wasn’t just a meal — it was a moment we will remember forever. Our guide, Humphrey, was truly exceptional. He navigates the Serengeti like it’s his home — because it is. His love for nature and wildlife is unmatched. He has an encyclopedia‑level knowledge of animals, birds, trees, their habits, calls, and behaviors. He made every game drive fun, warm, engaging, and full of excitement. His energy elevated the entire experience. Raymond also arranged for a professional journalist/photographer, David, to follow us and capture our special moments. David was absolutely 5‑star, and the memories he preserved for us are priceless. One standout moment was a Maasai experience that was unlike any typical tourist visit. It was intimate, respectful, and deeply meaningful — something we will never forget. Raymond has a rare gift for creating unforgettable, bespoke experiences. If you want a trip that feels personal, intentional, and truly special, Great Image Expedition can do it. My only wish is that we had stayed longer in the Serengeti — it was magical. This trip didn’t feel like a tour — it felt like family. And because of that, I already long to return
Therefore, when you book a safari in today’s world, there is much to consider. However, with the right advice and expert planning, you can confidently approach your travel arrangements. Additionally, our experienced team is here to provide guidance. In other words, we ensure that every detail is handled smoothly.
Moreover, if you book to travel with us, your plans are impacted by circumstances beyond your control, then we understand that flexibility is essential. Consequently, we offer options to adjust your reservation or cancel it. As a result, you will receive full credit for future travel expenses. Thus, you can plan your next adventure without worry.
