8-Day Ankole Culture & Wildlife Tour (Featuring Igongo)

Your adventure begins with a scenic drive from Kampala or Entebbe. First, we stop at the Equator for the iconic “water experiment” and photos. Afterward, we proceed to Mbarara to check into the Igongo Cultural Centre.

In the evening, you will tour the Eriijukiro Museum. This facility showcases the rich history of south-western Ugandan cultural groups. It serves as the perfect introduction to the region’s deep-rooted identity.

Wake up to the sounds of the countryside for a day of hands-on learning. On this 8-Day Ankole Culture & Wildlife Tour, we prioritize direct participation.

Specifically, you will join herdsmen for cattle milking (Omuganda). The long-horned cattle are central to the wealth of this community. Later, you can learn the art of traditional hut building. In the afternoon, enjoy a craft workshop or visit a local homestead to share stories with a welcoming family.

Experience the African wilderness from a unique perspective this morning. A boat safari on Lake Mburo reveals pods of hippos and basking crocodiles. Furthermore, birdwatchers will be thrilled to see the rare African Finfoot.

After checking out, we enjoy a scenic drive through the undulating Ankole hills. As a result of the lush greenery, many travelers compare this region to the Swiss Alps. We then settle in the Fort Portal region for the night.

Today is dedicated to exploring the Fort Portal Crater Lakes. These “explosion craters” created a stunning landscape thousands of years ago.

We take a guided nature walk around these emerald-green waters. Meanwhile, you can admire the Rwenzori Mountains looming in the distance. The walk also passes through fertile farmlands where locals grow coffee and vanilla in volcanic soil.

The “Green Gold” of Uganda takes center stage as we visit sprawling tea plantations. You will walk through the manicured estates and learn how tea is hand-picked.

In the afternoon, we visit the Karambi Royal Tombs. This is the final resting place of former Toro Kings. Therefore, it offers a sacred look into the spiritual heritage of the region’s monarchies. Finally, we transfer back to Mbarara for the night.

Enjoy a vibrant morning exploring Mbarara, the “City of Milk.” We will navigate local markets to find authentic handmade crafts and souvenirs.

This is the best time to purchase bark cloth or local spices. In the evening, we gather for a final dinner at Igongo. You can taste Eshabwe, a traditional ghee delicacy that defines Ankole cuisine.
