Wildlife and Landscape
Seasonally, the surrounding savannah bush teems with wildlife. Large herds of elephant, eland, zebra, wildebeest, and oryx roam freely, along with Grant’s and Thomson’s gazelles. Moreover, lions and cheetahs may leave their tracks in the dust as they pass through the region.
This open and arid land is dotted with “islands” of ancient acacia forest and seasonal swamps. These stretch out to meet the pans of the ‘Embosel’ ecosystem, which flows down to the lower slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro.
It is here, far from the busy tourism circuits of northern Tanzania, that elder elephants retreat. They spend their final years in peace and harmony—undisturbed by crowds and surrounded by nature.
Cultural Encounters and Maasai Traditions
The Camp offers a genuine Maasai cultural experience. Guests are invited to meet the Maasai people, understand their traditional medicines, participate in rituals, and even go animal tracking with them.
The West Kilimanjaro Concession
West Kilimanjaro is a private concession covering over 75,000 acres and borders Kenya’s Amboseli National Park. The area offers spectacular landscapes, excellent game viewing, and close interaction with local Maasai tribesmen.
Here, mixed woodlands, grasslands, and rocky peaks create a dramatic and photogenic environment. Furthermore, the wildlife and birdlife represent the Somali-Maasai biome. This gives guests a rare chance to see the gerenuk antelope, yellow baboon, and lesser kudu.
At night, it’s even possible to spot the elusive striped hyena—a real treat for wildlife enthusiasts.
The Elephants of Shu’mata
This region is also home to some of the largest-tusked elephant bulls left in Africa. These magnificent creatures move peacefully through the land. Observing them in their natural habitat is truly an unforgettable experience.
