Gombe Stream National Park

It is a thin strip of ancient forest set in a mountainous region, with steep valleys clinging to the shores of Lake Tanganyika.

The park’s major attraction is the Chimpanzees that live protected within its boundaries.

Tourists in this area can do chimpanzee trekking, hike to the waterfall, and take a guided walk in the forest or along the lakeshore.

The park is dominated by many steep-sided ridges and valleys. If you have come to see the chimpanzees, you will need to walk through these areas.

The scenery of Gombe is stunning. Most of the 16 significant valleys contain swift streams that flow all year.

This park allows visitors to meet the stars of the world-famous chimpanzee community. Jane Goodall began pioneering chimpanzee research in 1960.

The Gombe Chimps are one of the most closely and continuously studied populations.

We share more than 98 percent of our genes, so it’s a look of recognition from our closest animal relative.

Most of the mammals in this National Park are primates, mostly forest species. In addition to the famous chimpanzees, colorful red-tailed and blue monkeys are likely to be seen.

Gombe Stream National Park

Gombe Stream National Park is located in Tanzania’s westernmost region along the shores of Lake Tanganyika. It encompasses 14 square miles (35 km), making it the smallest national park in Tanzania and most of Africa.

The park comprises grasslands, woodlands, steep valleys, and tropical rainforests. Its diversity is surprising for such a small region. The area where the monkeys and primates are found is a dense jungle, which some may describe as an actual Tarzan-like setting.

Gombe Stream National Park is renowned for where Jane’s scientific research and work with Chimpanzees and other primates were conducted. Jane Odall began her studies in the area in 1960, and her work and observations are well documented and incredibly valuable to understanding primates and their behaviors and communications.

Chimpanzees are probably the park’s pinnacle attraction. However, other primates call the area home, including blue monkeys, olive baboons, red colobus monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, and vervet monkeys—one of Africa’s highest-concealed primates.

Birdwatching can be enjoyed by people of all ages. Other wildlife includes bush pigs, hippopotami, snakes, small antelope, and leopards. Leopa are key predators of chimpanzees and their cousin monkeys.
