Lake Victoria History and Facts

Lake Victoria, the largest tropical lake in Africa, holds a unique and prominent place in the heart of East Africa. Nestled in the Great Rift Valley, this natural wonder boasts an array of fascinating features, history, and ecological significance. In this article, we will embark on a journey to explore the secrets of Victoria, revealing its natural beauty, cultural importance, and the environmental challenges it faces.

The Magnificent Lake Victoria

A Glimpse of Size and Depth

Lake Victoria, often referred to as ‘Victoria Nyanza’ by the locals, spans across an impressive 68,800 square kilometers, making it one of the largest freshwater bodies on the African continent. With a maximum depth of about 84 meters, this vast expanse of water supports a diverse ecosystem.

Lake Victory: Africa's Largest Tropical Lake

A Biodiversity Hotspot

Diverse Flora and Fauna

Lake Victoria’s waters teem with life. It is home to numerous species of fish, with the Nile perch and tilapia being the most renowned. The lake’s shores are adorned with lush vegetation, showcasing a rich diversity of plants and trees that contribute to the region’s ecological equilibrium.

Cultural Significance

The Lifeblood of Communities

Lake Victoria is not only a natural wonder but also holds profound cultural significance for the communities that surround it. Local tribes, such as the Luo and Baganda, have deep-rooted connections with the lake, which plays a pivotal role in their traditions, livelihoods, and social ceremonies.

Environmental Challenges

A Delicate Ecosystem Under Threat

While Lake Victoria’s majesty is undeniable, it faces a set of severe environmental challenges. Pollution, overfishing, and invasive species pose a significant threat to the lake’s delicate ecosystem, causing imbalances that reverberate through the food chain.

The Plight of Pollution

A Growing Concern

Pollution from urban areas, agricultural runoff, and industrial activities has led to water quality issues in the lake. These challenges endanger the health of both the ecosystem and the millions of people who rely on the lake for drinking water and fisheries.

Overfishing: A Balance Tipped

Unsustainable Practices

Overfishing, driven by a burgeoning population and commercial interests, has placed immense pressure on Lake Victoria’s fish stocks. The unregulated catch and increased demand for fish jeopardize the survival of several native species.

Invasive Species: A Silent Invader

The Nile Perch Conundrum

The introduction of the Nile perch to Lake Victoria in the 1950s, while economically beneficial, disrupted the native fish populations. This invasive species caused the extinction of some indigenous species, impacting the lake’s ecological balance.

Conclusion

Victoria, Africa’s largest tropical lake, is a natural marvel that captures the essence of East Africa’s beauty and culture. However, it is also a fragile ecosystem facing numerous challenges. Preserving this magnificent waterbody requires collective efforts to combat pollution, regulate fishing practices, and restore the balance of its native species.

Usangu Expedition Camp

Location of Usangu Expedition Camp

The Usangu Wetland features a permanent water source in its centre, the Ihefu Swamp, surrounded by grassy marshlands and floodplains. During the dry season, only the Ihefu Swamp offers water but, as the rainy season develops, the wetland expands to cover an enormous area. On the outer limits of the wet season high-water mark, the miombo forest thrives and provides the perfectly shaded location for Usangu Expedition Camp.

The Usangu Wetland is an essential feature to the Ruaha-Rungwa ecosystem, with major implications for ecosystems thousands of kilometres away from the wetland itself. Its features are unique and under the proper conditions and health, the biodiversity of species is undeniably a treasure trove. Herds of roan and sable roam the vast wetland, and wild dogs run wide along rivers.

Hundreds of ostrich congregate in a way that is not often seen in other places in Africa. Thousands of migratory bird species pass through the wetland as well as unidentified amphibians, still waiting to be discovered.

EXPERIENCES:

Ruaha’s wildlife is renowned throughout East Africa and we aim to provide the best opportunities — from game drives to walking safaris — for all kinds of animal sightings. Explore this little-known area within Ruaha: go boating through the waterways, and walk the wide-open grasslands.

Game drives

The best times to depart on a game drive are early morning and late afternoon to avoid the midday heat when animals are less active. With your private vehicle and guide, you have the flexibility to explore any (accessible) area of the Usangu wetlands. Usangu has five biozones and offers many different habitat types that are waiting to be explored. Our up-cycled Land Rovers have been re-built from the ground up and are powered by green alcohol fuel (ethanol). This five-seater, safari vehicle offers unobstructed views — built for comfort, bush driving and remarkable off-road capability.

Night drives

See a different side of Usangu with a night drive. It’s a special opportunity to spot shy, nocturnal animals and the those that prey on them. With the aid of your knowledgeable guide, keep your eyes out for leopard, genet, serval, honey badger, civet and African wildcats on the hunt; as well as bush babies, mongoose, bat-eared fox, nightjars and owls going about their business. Don’t forget to take a moment to a gaze up at the breath-taking night sky.

Boating safaris

The wetland area and the intricate waterways that swell and contract throughout the season create a variety of conditions for boating. Our swamp boat is designed for these marsh-like conditions, offering the opportunity to explore the wetland narrow waterways year-round. Elephant are regularly seen along the shallows, and the birdlife is fantastic.

Family safaris

We welcome families with children over 12 years old. If the camp is booked on an exclusive use basis, younger children can be accommodated, but participation in walking activities and canoeing will not be permitted.

Walking safaris

Walking safaris give you the opportunity to immerse yourself in nature, away from the noise of the land cruiser and closer to the ground to observe the smaller and less obvious parts of the African wilderness. This is a completely different way to experience the bush, encouraging your senses to engage as you spot tiny but fascinating creatures you’d never see from the vehicle.

WHEN TO GO

What to expect during the year

Usangu is open from June to November, when it’s hot and dry. During this time, the Usangu wetlands recede, and the surrounding grasslands dry out into wide open spaces ideal for walking. The rains that fall from November until April transform the landscape, making it green and lush but also creating logistical problems as the road networks become water-logged and the rising floodplains limit land-based activities.

Zuri Zanzibar

Nungwi,is a large beach located in the far northern end of the island of Zanzibar. Nungwi is the second largest settlement on the island. It is situated in the Unguja North Region. It is about 35 miles (56 km) north of Zanzibar Town on the Nungwi Peninsula, about an hour drive from Stone Town. To the south Nungwi shares a border with the neighboring Matemwe. Nungwi was traditionally a fishing village and dhow-building center, but is now a popular tourist destination, and for instance recognized in CNN’s list of “100 best beaches of the world” in 2014. West Nungwi has changed a lot since the 1990s and is now a popular tourist destination with numerous resorts, restaurants, bars, stores, and Nungwi is where Zuri zanzibar situated.

Zuri Zanzibar offers a completely unique experience in Zanzibar for anyone that wants to try something off the beaten African tracks; a place that allows guests a feeling of peace and tranquility.

Zuri Zanzibar
Zuri Zanzibar

ZURI” MEANS “BEAUTIFUL” IN SWAHILI, WHICH IS THE LANGUAGE OF THE ISLAND OF ZANZIBAR. AND THAT IS PRECISELY THE FEELING WE WANT YOU TO EXPERIENCE IN OUR 12 HECTARE MICRO-UNIVERSE. WHEN THINKING HOW BEST TO EVOKE THE BEAUTY OF ZURI TO YOU SENSUALLY, WE FOCUSED METICULOUSLY ON THREE MAIN AREAS:

THE BEACH was the reason why I bought the land many years ago. Unlike most Zanzibar beaches where one must walk 500m to swim at low tide, our beach, settled in the large lagoon, is always perfect. I have travelled the world and stayed in the most exclusive sea-front properties, but I still consider Zuri’s beach as one of the best on Earth. It is not just the white sand and the incredible color of the turquoise Indian Ocean, but also the local way of life, which is so cheerful and optimistic. When you see the dhows (the traditional wooden sailing boats) at a distance during the spectacular sunsets, you do not need to practice mindfulness or meditation training to enjoy the present moment and understand the power of now.

Zuri Zanzibar
Zuri Zanzibar

THE HOTEL is not made up of rooms; just villas, and bungalows. Each separated from one another to attain absolute privacy, and all of them outfitted with outdoor showers and large terraces. The size of our plot could easily accommodate twice as many houses, but we decided to build only 56 of them. Nestled on a west-facing slope, most of the units enjoy direct sea-views. And our ceilings reach for the sky: African-style roofing delivers a breathtaking cathedral-like feeling over your bed and cannot be compared to anything you would find in busy Western cities. On the other hand, being so far away from civilization, we did not want to compromise the quality of your connection with the rest of the world, which is why we have built our own dedicated fast internet line to the mainland – the only hotel in Zanzibar to date!

Zuri Zanzibar
Zuri Zanzibar

THE GARDEN is the icing on the cake. I do not mean the private spice garden covering a quarter of our land – the only one of its kind in the area. I mean that Zuri itself IS the garden. All the villas and bungalows are just part of an enormous tropical park which you can enjoy by walking through and investigating. Hundreds of gardeners and landscape designers needed more than two years to select all the trees and flowers, in which you can bask. The result is an enormous tribute to the pinnacle of Zanzibar and its rich historical legacy.

Today, when more and more things tend to feel and taste the same, it is not an overstatement to say that Zanzibar is different. Located just on the Equator, the colours are more intense, more saturated, more vibrant. And, for some reason, the time runs differently as well! In this environment, it is so easy to forget our daily routines, to rouse our dormant imagination, and to perceive life from a new angle. Stop “doing” and start “being”. Because, ultimately, – we are human beings, not human doings! And it all began in Africa 🙂

Lemala Nanyukie Lodge

Meaning ‘endless plains’ in the Maasai language, the Serengeti is undoubtedly one of the world’s most celebrated wilderness areas. Lemala Nanyukie is located a 60-minute drive east of the Seronera Airstrip in the park’s central region, and is superbly located with outstanding views across these fascinating ‘endless plains’. The lodge itself sits on a grassy savanna dotted with rocky kopjes and shaded by ancient giant acacia trees.

This area of the Serengeti is crossed by the thrilling wildlife spectacle of the annual wildebeest migration, but also has high-density game-viewing at all times and is well-known for its large concentration of cats, so much so that until recently this area was set aside for scientific research into predators, especially cheetah. As such, Lemala Nanyukie is open year-round.

This is surely one of the most dramatic walks in the world with magnificent views across the Serengeti, Olduvai Gorge, and the Gol Mountains as you descend off the back of the Ngorongoro Crater rim and down onto the edge of the Southern Serengeti plains.

Highland walks

These are the unforgettable experiences of Africa which very few get, to have it properly beneath your feet. You’ll be out of the cars with your guide, in the sparkling highland air. Along too, a Maasai scout – showing you his version of the natural world – and an armed ranger to keep you safe.

Crater game drives

Naturally, we’ve found the right spot for a more private experience of this wildlife mecca. Being right on the rim, we have access to the Crater soon after dawn, often first in line avoiding the dreaded mini-buses, to take you to see the outstanding volumes of wildlife: from some of Africa’s last rhinoceros to flamingoes to lovebirds.

Walk the wonder of the world

Start early with coffee before you wend your way along ancient cattle trails through high-altitude meadows, past picturesque Maasai Bomas and Acacia woodlands, revealing stunning views of Lemakarot Mountain as you gradually descend to the endless plains of the Serengeti.

The transition from the montane Crater highlands down to the infinity of the Serengeti plains is a gradual yet dramatic change in landscape, navigated in the company of your Maasai guides whose knowledge of this part of the world is steeped in their DNA.

Lunch on the Crater rim

The ultimate picnic spot overlooking the vast Ngorongoro Crater. Give us the nod ahead of time and we’ll have this ready for your return from your morning game drive. Then after your long and lazy lunch, how about a gentle stroll back into camp for a well-earned rest?

Lunch on the Crater rim
Lunch on the Crater rim

The Ngorongoro Crater offers phenomenal game viewing throughout the year, but particular seasons offer their special highlights.

Entamanu sits on an extraordinary site in the sharp air of the highlands and there’s nothing tame about this location – the high-altitude sun has some real heat, and the wind can be biting and sometimes noisy. We’ve taken up the challenge to create a camp that makes the most of the extraordinary view while providing warmth and shelter from the elements while being entirely removable.

The Crater itself takes on a life of its own when it comes to weather patterns. With an altitudinal range of 960m to 3,648m, its climatic zones range from semi-arid to montane forest, and there is often a remarkable difference between the conditions on either side of the Crater, and particularly between the rim (often cold and foggy in the mornings) and the crater floor which is much hotter and often clear. Temperatures on the rim can drop to around or below freezing so warm clothes are a must throughout the year, and it can get windy at Entamanu, particularly in July and August.

As its little microhabitat, the Crater includes a variety of small ecosystems, a saline lake, swamps, plains, and forests – and all this supports a population of about 25,000 mammals and an impressive number of bird species. Most of the wildlife never leaves the Crater floor and it has a well-earned reputation as one of the most epic wildlife experiences in Africa. It can get busy with vehicles on the Crater floor, but our location on the rim means we can beat most of the crowds onto the Crater floor in the mornings, and retreat to our remote corner of the wilderness to explore on foot or venture further afield to the less famous but equally impressive sites such as Empakai and Ol Moti.

Tanzania , officially the United Republic of Tanzania is a country in East Africa within the African Great Lakes region. It borders Uganda to the north; Kenya to the northeast; the Indian Ocean to the north. Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain, is in northeastern Tanzania. According to the 2022 national census, Tanzania has a population of nearly 62 million, making it the most populous country located entirely south of the equator.

Timing your Safari

Let’s begin with a crucial inquiry: When is the ideal time to travel to Tanzania? There are, just two main seasons: the wet season and the dry season. Which are, respectively, the low season and the peak season.

The wet season (Nov to May) offers wildebeest return, birding, calving, and affordable rates among its attractions.

June through October during the dry season is very magical. There is no weather like it during the dry season, and thirsty animals are constantly swarming the waterholes. Undoubtedly a fantastic time to go on a safari, but do yourself a favor and make your reservations EARLY!

There’s more to Tanzania than just safari—Trekking Mt Kilimanjaro!

You supposedly believed that Tanzania’s main attraction was its safari. I’m sorry, but no. Introducing Mt. Kilimanjaro, our beautiful yet formidable trump card.

Of course, Climbing Kilimanjaro is another activity we have voted for you to add to your bucket list. Please allow us to explain. Imagine closing your eyes and taking a deep breath. The air is colder and thinner, and your nose feels frigid. You execute a 360-degree spin with your arms extended; your eyes open, and Tanzania and Mount Kilimanjaro are below you. You’re enjoying life and feel equipped to take on the world. Because of this, we surreptitiously added Kilimanjaro to your bucket list. Nothing beats the sensation of genuinely existing, so why not experience it from the summit of Africa’s tallest mountain?

Small group tour vs private tour – which one is right for you?

The majority of trip providers will provide these choices, and picking the right one is crucial. In a word, a small group tour involves sharing the safari vehicle and Kilimanjaro route with a few kind strangers, as opposed to a private tour, which includes you, your driver/guide, and anybody else is travelling with you. Obviously, the private tour will cost more—roughly 10% to 15% more—but that’s a tiny thing to pay for a honeymoon or other special occasion. Take a look at this well-liked tour choice.

What is your accommodation style?

What hotel do you use? Oh man, this is a conversation point that is unique to each individual or travel party.  While on safari, you can locate accommodations in any desired style as well as in any desired price range. If you want to camp in the Serengeti National Park, live it up in a 5-star luxury hotel, or even live in a tree house, get in touch with us and we’ll make your dreams come true.

In Kilimanjaro, lodging is a little bit unusual; either you have tents or you have tents. Although! Let us let you in on a little secret: there are mountain lodges on the Marangu trail! Would you like to know more about the many lodging options we offer? Click this.

A brief overview of local culture and etiquette in Tanzania

How do we even begin? With over 120 tribes and over 126 languages, Tanzania is one of the nations with the greatest ethnic and cultural diversity in the world. Click here to find out more about the fascinating tribes of Tanzania. Here are certain guidelines for cultural politeness, though. Always use your right hand when shaking hands (the left hand is for restroom needs, while the right hand is for eating and greeting). Regardless of your state of hunger or taste preferences, it is expected that you try at least a little portion of each dish at a meal to show respect.

It is best to repay the favor and study up on Tanzanian culture and traditions before you travel there because Tanzania is home to many hospitable and friendly locals. You’ll not only treat the people with respect, but you’ll have a much deeper understanding of their way of life. Here are some typical Tanzanian traditions, practices, and helpful advice to keep in mind during your journey to Tanzania, covering anything from greetings and public affection to dining and clothing decorum.

No PDAs, please! Tanzanians show their friendliness by being affectionate, but only with people of the same sex. Any amorous feelings should be kept inside your accommodation.
