Zuri Zanzibar

Nungwi,is a large beach located in the far northern end of the island of Zanzibar. Nungwi is the second largest settlement on the island. It is situated in the Unguja North Region. It is about 35 miles (56 km) north of Zanzibar Town on the Nungwi Peninsula, about an hour drive from Stone Town. To the south Nungwi shares a border with the neighboring Matemwe. Nungwi was traditionally a fishing village and dhow-building center, but is now a popular tourist destination, and for instance recognized in CNN’s list of “100 best beaches of the world” in 2014. West Nungwi has changed a lot since the 1990s and is now a popular tourist destination with numerous resorts, restaurants, bars, stores, and Nungwi is where Zuri zanzibar situated.

Zuri Zanzibar offers a completely unique experience in Zanzibar for anyone that wants to try something off the beaten African tracks; a place that allows guests a feeling of peace and tranquility.

Zuri Zanzibar
Zuri Zanzibar

ZURI” MEANS “BEAUTIFUL” IN SWAHILI, WHICH IS THE LANGUAGE OF THE ISLAND OF ZANZIBAR. AND THAT IS PRECISELY THE FEELING WE WANT YOU TO EXPERIENCE IN OUR 12 HECTARE MICRO-UNIVERSE. WHEN THINKING HOW BEST TO EVOKE THE BEAUTY OF ZURI TO YOU SENSUALLY, WE FOCUSED METICULOUSLY ON THREE MAIN AREAS:

THE BEACH was the reason why I bought the land many years ago. Unlike most Zanzibar beaches where one must walk 500m to swim at low tide, our beach, settled in the large lagoon, is always perfect. I have travelled the world and stayed in the most exclusive sea-front properties, but I still consider Zuri’s beach as one of the best on Earth. It is not just the white sand and the incredible color of the turquoise Indian Ocean, but also the local way of life, which is so cheerful and optimistic. When you see the dhows (the traditional wooden sailing boats) at a distance during the spectacular sunsets, you do not need to practice mindfulness or meditation training to enjoy the present moment and understand the power of now.

Zuri Zanzibar
Zuri Zanzibar

THE HOTEL is not made up of rooms; just villas, and bungalows. Each separated from one another to attain absolute privacy, and all of them outfitted with outdoor showers and large terraces. The size of our plot could easily accommodate twice as many houses, but we decided to build only 56 of them. Nestled on a west-facing slope, most of the units enjoy direct sea-views. And our ceilings reach for the sky: African-style roofing delivers a breathtaking cathedral-like feeling over your bed and cannot be compared to anything you would find in busy Western cities. On the other hand, being so far away from civilization, we did not want to compromise the quality of your connection with the rest of the world, which is why we have built our own dedicated fast internet line to the mainland – the only hotel in Zanzibar to date!

Zuri Zanzibar
Zuri Zanzibar

THE GARDEN is the icing on the cake. I do not mean the private spice garden covering a quarter of our land – the only one of its kind in the area. I mean that Zuri itself IS the garden. All the villas and bungalows are just part of an enormous tropical park which you can enjoy by walking through and investigating. Hundreds of gardeners and landscape designers needed more than two years to select all the trees and flowers, in which you can bask. The result is an enormous tribute to the pinnacle of Zanzibar and its rich historical legacy.

Today, when more and more things tend to feel and taste the same, it is not an overstatement to say that Zanzibar is different. Located just on the Equator, the colours are more intense, more saturated, more vibrant. And, for some reason, the time runs differently as well! In this environment, it is so easy to forget our daily routines, to rouse our dormant imagination, and to perceive life from a new angle. Stop “doing” and start “being”. Because, ultimately, – we are human beings, not human doings! And it all began in Africa 🙂

Discover Lemala Nanyukie Lodge

Having opened in October 2018 in the fabulous Eastern Serengeti, Lemala Nanyukie matches the same outstanding standards of comfort and service as the other properties in Lemala’s luxury collection, which includes the Serengeti’s Lemala Kuria Hills Lodge and Lemala Mpingo Ridge in Tarangire together with Hamerkop House by Lemala in Arusha.

Lemala Nanyukie Lodge
Lemala Nanyukie Lodge

Meaning ‘endless plains’ in the Maasai language, the Serengeti is undoubtedly one of the world’s most celebrated wilderness areas. Lemala Nanyukie is located a 60-minute drive east of the Seronera Airstrip in the park’s central region, and is superbly located with outstanding views across these fascinating ‘endless plains’. The lodge itself sits on a grassy savanna dotted with rocky kopjes and shaded by ancient giant acacia trees.

This area of the Serengeti is crossed by the thrilling wildlife spectacle of the annual wildebeest migration, but also has high-density game-viewing at all times and is well-known for its large concentration of cats, so much so that until recently this area was set aside for scientific research into predators, especially cheetah. As such, Lemala Nanyukie is open year-round.

Entamanu Ngorongoro

Naturally, our take on this wildlife shangri-la is wilder, woolier, and much more absorbed.

Here, we define our own Ngorongoro, off the beaten track, in Maasai territory. Following one of the world’s most stunning private drives, we bring you up to a dizzying edge of elemental Africa with panoramic views spinning forward into the Crater and back to the Serengeti plains. This is much more than a great vantage point for visiting the Crater, this is where we live the Ngorongoro life.

There is surely no truer way to appreciate the magnitude and wonder of the Ngorongoro Crater, than from Entamanu where it’s done entirely on your terms and schedules.

How Entamanu was built

Meaning ‘circle’ in Maa, the language of the Maasai, Entamanu is the perfect name for our understated luxury camp on the Ngorongoro Crater edge. We thought long and hard about how to ‘be’ in this ancient place and were resolute that leave no impact should we ever leave. And we’re proud to say we achieved our goals!

Elemental and wild

Typical. Of all the possible sites encircling this unique wildlife Shangri-la, we pick the wild and woolliest. Following one of the world’s most stunning private drives, we bring you to a soft edge of oxygenated, elemental Africa with heady panoramas spinning forward into the Crater and across the Serengeti Plains.

This is a place to slow down, breathe, feel Ngorongoro’s rhythms under your feet, and look deeper, through Maasai’s eyes.

Life-changing experiences at Entamanu

Ngorongoro is always an outstanding day out; way up on the rim, we take the experience to another level.

An unforgettable journey is best taken on foot

Entamanu is the only place in the world where you can see the Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti plains from the same spot. And in our determination to mold your Crater experience a little differently, we highly recommend you take the unique opportunity to walk from Entamanu to Serengeti Safari Camp.

This is surely one of the most dramatic walks in the world with magnificent views across the Serengeti, Olduvai Gorge, and the Gol Mountains as you descend off the back of the Ngorongoro Crater rim and down onto the edge of the Southern Serengeti plains.

Highland walks

These are the unforgettable experiences of Africa which very few get, to have it properly beneath your feet. You’ll be out of the cars with your guide, in the sparkling highland air. Along too, a Maasai scout – showing you his version of the natural world – and an armed ranger to keep you safe.

Crater game drives

Naturally, we’ve found the right spot for a more private experience of this wildlife mecca. Being right on the rim, we have access to the Crater soon after dawn, often first in line avoiding the dreaded mini-buses, to take you to see the outstanding volumes of wildlife: from some of Africa’s last rhinoceros to flamingoes to lovebirds.

Walk the wonder of the world

Start early with coffee before you wend your way along ancient cattle trails through high-altitude meadows, past picturesque Maasai Bomas and Acacia woodlands, revealing stunning views of Lemakarot Mountain as you gradually descend to the endless plains of the Serengeti.

The transition from the montane Crater highlands down to the infinity of the Serengeti plains is a gradual yet dramatic change in landscape, navigated in the company of your Maasai guides whose knowledge of this part of the world is steeped in their DNA.

Lunch on the Crater rim

The ultimate picnic spot overlooking the vast Ngorongoro Crater. Give us the nod ahead of time and we’ll have this ready for your return from your morning game drive. Then after your long and lazy lunch, how about a gentle stroll back into camp for a well-earned rest?

Lunch on the Crater rim
Lunch on the Crater rim

The Ngorongoro Crater offers phenomenal game viewing throughout the year, but particular seasons offer their special highlights.

Entamanu sits on an extraordinary site in the sharp air of the highlands and there’s nothing tame about this location – the high-altitude sun has some real heat, and the wind can be biting and sometimes noisy. We’ve taken up the challenge to create a camp that makes the most of the extraordinary view while providing warmth and shelter from the elements while being entirely removable.

The Crater itself takes on a life of its own when it comes to weather patterns. With an altitudinal range of 960m to 3,648m, its climatic zones range from semi-arid to montane forest, and there is often a remarkable difference between the conditions on either side of the Crater, and particularly between the rim (often cold and foggy in the mornings) and the crater floor which is much hotter and often clear. Temperatures on the rim can drop to around or below freezing so warm clothes are a must throughout the year, and it can get windy at Entamanu, particularly in July and August.

As its little microhabitat, the Crater includes a variety of small ecosystems, a saline lake, swamps, plains, and forests – and all this supports a population of about 25,000 mammals and an impressive number of bird species. Most of the wildlife never leaves the Crater floor and it has a well-earned reputation as one of the most epic wildlife experiences in Africa. It can get busy with vehicles on the Crater floor, but our location on the rim means we can beat most of the crowds onto the Crater floor in the mornings, and retreat to our remote corner of the wilderness to explore on foot or venture further afield to the less famous but equally impressive sites such as Empakai and Ol Moti.

LOCATION

  • Location of Sayari Camp

The northern Serengeti is one of Africa’s most popular safari destinations, and for good reason. From mid-June to November, the great herds of wildebeest gather on the banks of the Mara River in the northern Serengeti, ready to brave the crocodile-infested waters and hungry predators on the other side. Dramatic and exciting game viewing awaits as the wildebeest thunder across in their millions and the northern Serengeti is transformed into a pulsing hub of activity. Sayari, situated near the Tanzanian side of the Mara River, is a great choice for accommodation at this time of year.

Once the migrating herds have traveled back south, experience having these vast plains to yourself, where wildlife is abundant and sightings of lion and cheetah are frequent. You might see elephants, rhinos, and even leopards lurking in the riverine forests. Birders can spot some of the European migrants that arrive over this season, too.

EXPERIENCES

  • Blending seamlessly with the outdoors

Sayari has been carefully designed to include two lounges and dining areas. Both blend seamlessly with the outdoors, with large glass sliding doors that allow for uninterrupted views of the rolling Serengeti plains. Both the lounge and dining areas provide a place for you to unwind in nature and enjoy a delicious meal shared with fellow guests. Choose to dine indoors or al fresco, depending on the setting you prefer.

Framed by natural rock formations, the camp’s beautiful infinity pool boasts impressive views of the Serengeti and is the ideal spot to escape the heat and spend a lazy afternoon gazing at the game-filled plains.

A typical day on safari at Sayari Camp

We take advantage of the cooler conditions and head out on game drives in the early mornings and late afternoons. This is when the wildlife, especially predators, are more active. Start the day bright and early with a wake-up call where tea or coffee is delivered to your suite. Enjoy breakfast before you depart for a morning game drive (or have it packed as a picnic to take with you). You’ll arrive back at camp late morning, with a chance to freshen up before lunch.

After a leisurely lunch, enjoy siesta time. Take a dip in the pool, unwind with a massage, or enjoy some retail therapy in our safari shop. Refuel with afternoon tea, then depart for an afternoon/evening game drive followed by sundowners around a campfire. You’ll be back in time for drinks at the bar and dinner under the stars.

If you have booked a private vehicle, your guide will quickly get to know you and your preferences, and you’ll enjoy the convenience of exclusivity and flexibility.

Game drives

Game drives are typically enjoyed twice per day: in the early morning and late afternoon. Our robust, custom-modified 4×4s and highly trained driver-guides cover rough terrain to discover incredible new slices of nature, crossing low rivers and overcoming steep gullies to cruising over vast, open plains. We have closed and open-sided game vehicles specially fitted with charging points for your phone or camera, and fridges for refreshing drinks on the go.

Hot-air balloon safaris

A hot-air balloon safari sees you soaring above the Serengeti plains as the sun rises in the early morning. During migration season, this is a great way to appreciate the full scope of the herds. Hot-air balloon trips are at extra cost and are weather-dependent.

Microbrewery

Join us for a drink at the Serengeti’s first solar-powered microbrewery. The brewery produces four unique beers for Asilia – perfect for safari sundowners! It also can produce soft drinks, as well as purify water, and produce sparkling water using solar power. Our brand-new brewery also means that there is no longer a need to bring plastic bottles and aluminum cans into camp, ultimately reducing our plastic waste as well as our transport impact on the environment.

Library and information centre

Sayari features a library and information center with a cultural focus on the Kuria tribe. Music is integral to Kuria culture, playing a key role not just in ceremonies and celebrations but also in daily life. There will also be plenty of interesting facts about The Great Migration to be found in our new information center. The migration passes by Sayari from June through to October, and the camp is in a prime location for witnessing thousands of wildebeest crash across the Mara River as part of their Great Migration.

What to expect during the year

The Serengeti is a year-round destination, with great wildlife-viewing opportunities during both the dry and wet seasons. Most tourists arrive in July and August for the famous wildebeest migration herds in the northern Serengeti that can usually be seen until October. With relatively dry conditions and fewer crowds, January, February, September, and October are great months to travel.

Sayari Camp
Sayari Camp

JANUARY – MARCH

There’s a break in the rains over January and February before the long rains begin in March. The migratory birds are in the region and photographic conditions are perfect, with lush grasses and clear skies. There are fewer tourists in the north at this time.

PRIL – JUNE

Sayari is closed throughout April and May. June is dry and a good time to travel, just before peak season. This is when the wildebeest herds begin moving into the north.

 JULY – SEPTEMBER

This is peak season for travelers who want to see the wildebeest herds gathering around the Mara River, which they must cross to reach Kenya’s Masai Mara. The river crossings take place throughout this period, though seeing one is not guaranteed. The dry season is a wonderful time to travel and the conditions are perfect for spotting wildlife.

OCTOBER – DECEMBER

The Serengeti crowds thin out from late September as the wildebeest herds make their way southward. There’s a chance of seeing the final river crossings in October, as the herds travel back to the Serengeti from the Mara. The short rains replenish the landscape and the migratory birds begin to arrive from Europe and Asia.
