FAQs

Lemosho Route: Distance and Difficulty

The Lemosho route is approximately 70 km (42 miles) from gate to gate, with an elevation gain of about 16,000 to 17,000 feet. This route is designed for physically fit individuals with some hiking experience, as it involves a steady ascent through varied terrain and high altitudes. The gradual climb helps with acclimatization, but it’s still a challenging trek, requiring stamina and

Machame vs. Lemosho: Popular Routes on Kilimanjaro

The Machame and Lemosho are both popular routes and, as such, are among the busiest on Mount Kilimanjaro. However, the Machame route tends to be slightly busier than the Lemosho. This is mainly because the Machame offers a slightly shorter (and therefore cheaper) itinerary.

Lemosho Route: Moderate Trek with a Challenging Summit Day

I would rate the Lemosho route as moderate, with the summit day being particularly challenging. You hike between 4 and 12 km daily at a steady pace, with plenty of rest for acclimatization. As someone who hikes regularly, I found the first six days relatively easy. However, summit day was very tough, with long hours of strenuous hiking, especially at high altitude.

Lemosho Route Success Rate is 95%

The 8 or 7-day route from the southwest offers excellent acclimatisation, a good climb high, and a low sleep profile. The 8-day option averages 90% success in reaching the summit, and a 7-day Lemosho has an 85% success rate.
