Every month is different…

Nature is full of surprises, this year the rainy season has been longer than usual and that sets the balance for everything else in Tanzania.

But in general, this is how it goes:

December

January

February

The three months of December, January, and February make up the Green Season. Everything grows and flourishes; it’s also called the calving season as all the young are born. A visit during this time holds a high chance of catching a glimpse of a baby giraffe being born, you might see a baby elephant, but you’ve more than a good chance of seeing lion cubs.

This is nature as it was intended, but do keep in mind, the lurking predator belongs here too.

For birdwatchers, this is the ideal time, especially on and around Lake Manyara. It’s hot at this time of the year and the temperature hovers more or less around 30oc.

We’re looking forward to welcoming you into the wilderness of Tanzania

Yes, I am talking about the African red-billed hornbill and Warthogs. Whether you are a fan of birds or an animal lover, Serengeti has got it all! The best way to see them close enough is through a game drive. As much as one would like to cover the park in its entirety, it is not possible due to its massive size. You will have to choose an area to visit or make multiple visits to see a different scene each time.

Start the day on a high note by soaring above the plains in a hot-air balloon. As the sun rises, watch the herds of elephants from above and admire the unspoiled landscape. Hot-air balloon rides are at an additional cost and are weather-dependent. The flight length varies between 50 to 90 minutes, depending on the weather conditions. Bush breakfast after landing.

Exploring the Serengeti’s wilderness through game drives or taking to the skies in a hot air balloon is a thrilling way to get up close and personal with the park’s diverse fauna and flora.

We have a strong bond with the local communities. And we are happy to share our ties with your guests should they be interested.

In Tanzania, there is a great diversity of tribes and ethnic groups of great interest. Tribes such as Hadzabe, Datoga, Masai, Wairak, and other tribes can be visited from Serengeti Park. The activity consists of visiting the local ethnic group to learn about their traditions and way of living.

Walking safaris in Serengeti.

On a walking safari, you have the chance to see nature in a completely different way than from a vehicle. It is a step-by-step discovery of the Serengeti.

Now that we have established two great ways to explore Serengeti, this one is for the brave and adventurous. Only 25% of Serengeti is open to tourism by going around in cars, which leaves 75% of the unseen territory. The way to explore these areas is on foot.

If you love camping and backpacking, read along! You can either have a base camp and explore the surroundings around this, have a moving base with a crew to help move and set up, or go on a full-out adventure and carry on with the minimum to survive. It is one of the best ways to feel one with nature!

The Serengeti Grumeti River

The Grumeti River offers one of the nail-biting moments of the Serengeti migration. Located at the border of Serengeti and Mara, it is a natural corridor to aid the migration between the two parks. It is not a place to miss for Avid nature lovers. This river is home to crocodiles, and the migration journey comes down to survival of the fittest. Zuri Zanzibar

Nungwi,is a large beach located in the far northern end of the island of Zanzibar. Nungwi is the second largest settlement on the island. It is situated in the Unguja North Region. It is about 35 miles (56 km) north of Zanzibar Town on the Nungwi Peninsula, about an hour drive from Stone Town. To the south Nungwi shares a border with the neighboring Matemwe. Nungwi was traditionally a fishing village and dhow-building center, but is now a popular tourist destination, and for instance recognized in CNN’s list of “100 best beaches of the world” in 2014. West Nungwi has changed a lot since the 1990s and is now a popular tourist destination with numerous resorts, restaurants, bars, stores, and Nungwi is where Zuri zanzibar situated.

Zuri Zanzibar offers a completely unique experience in Zanzibar for anyone that wants to try something off the beaten African tracks; a place that allows guests a feeling of peace and tranquility.

Zuri Zanzibar
Zuri Zanzibar

ZURI” MEANS “BEAUTIFUL” IN SWAHILI, WHICH IS THE LANGUAGE OF THE ISLAND OF ZANZIBAR. AND THAT IS PRECISELY THE FEELING WE WANT YOU TO EXPERIENCE IN OUR 12 HECTARE MICRO-UNIVERSE. WHEN THINKING HOW BEST TO EVOKE THE BEAUTY OF ZURI TO YOU SENSUALLY, WE FOCUSED METICULOUSLY ON THREE MAIN AREAS:

THE BEACH was the reason why I bought the land many years ago. Unlike most Zanzibar beaches where one must walk 500m to swim at low tide, our beach, settled in the large lagoon, is always perfect. I have travelled the world and stayed in the most exclusive sea-front properties, but I still consider Zuri’s beach as one of the best on Earth. It is not just the white sand and the incredible color of the turquoise Indian Ocean, but also the local way of life, which is so cheerful and optimistic. When you see the dhows (the traditional wooden sailing boats) at a distance during the spectacular sunsets, you do not need to practice mindfulness or meditation training to enjoy the present moment and understand the power of now.

Zuri Zanzibar
Zuri Zanzibar

THE HOTEL is not made up of rooms; just villas, and bungalows. Each separated from one another to attain absolute privacy, and all of them outfitted with outdoor showers and large terraces. The size of our plot could easily accommodate twice as many houses, but we decided to build only 56 of them. Nestled on a west-facing slope, most of the units enjoy direct sea-views. And our ceilings reach for the sky: African-style roofing delivers a breathtaking cathedral-like feeling over your bed and cannot be compared to anything you would find in busy Western cities. On the other hand, being so far away from civilization, we did not want to compromise the quality of your connection with the rest of the world, which is why we have built our own dedicated fast internet line to the mainland – the only hotel in Zanzibar to date!

Zuri Zanzibar
Zuri Zanzibar

THE GARDEN is the icing on the cake. I do not mean the private spice garden covering a quarter of our land – the only one of its kind in the area. I mean that Zuri itself IS the garden. All the villas and bungalows are just part of an enormous tropical park which you can enjoy by walking through and investigating. Hundreds of gardeners and landscape designers needed more than two years to select all the trees and flowers, in which you can bask. The result is an enormous tribute to the pinnacle of Zanzibar and its rich historical legacy.

Today, when more and more things tend to feel and taste the same, it is not an overstatement to say that Zanzibar is different. Located just on the Equator, the colours are more intense, more saturated, more vibrant. And, for some reason, the time runs differently as well! In this environment, it is so easy to forget our daily routines, to rouse our dormant imagination, and to perceive life from a new angle. Stop “doing” and start “being”. Because, ultimately, – we are human beings, not human doings! And it all began in Africa 🙂

Between June and October, Olakira is in the north to witness the crossing of the Mara River. Here, watch thousands of wildebeest take a leap of faith into the water, facing hungry Nile crocodiles and cantankerous hippos. When the herds are on the move, the air is full of grunting, thudding hooves, and billowing dust. From December until March, we move camp to the southern plains of the Serengeti, where the wildebeest go to give birth and graze on lush grass, and predators such as lions and cheetahs gather to prey on the young.

Even at night, the Olakira Migration Camp experience is special. Our mesh-covered stargazing tents allow guests to sleep under a sky of glittering stars.

OLAKIRA MIGRATION CAMP

Location of Olakira Migration Camp

As a mobile camp, our location changes with the seasons. We pack up camp and move twice per year. Note that the camp does not operate in April and May.

Olakira Migration Camp North: June to October

Between June and October, we are in the Bolongoja region in the northern Serengeti, watching the wildebeest herds crossing the Mara River. Watch hundreds of thousands of wildebeest plunge into the water and hurry across in a bid to avoid the crocodiles that lie in wait.

Olakira Migration Camp South: December to March

In December, we move to our southern base in Ndutu, in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Here, the camp is conveniently close to an airstrip, besides being well positioned for excellent wildlife viewing. From here, we look across grassy plains, on which the wildebeest gather to give birth around February each year. Watch thousands of wobbly-legged young finding their feet, something they have to do quickly to avoid the watchful big cats that stalk these plains.

The ultimate Migration camp

Olakira Migration Camp follows the migration throughout the year, offering the closest possible view of the action. The canvas tents are designed to blend into the bush without leaving a trace, though that doesn’t mean we scrimp on comforts. Admire the sprawling plains of the Serengeti or Ndutu region from the dining tent, or spend a leisurely afternoon in an armchair, watching zebras or Thomson’s gazelles pass by. A typical day on safari at Olakira Migration Camp

The best time to see wildlife is at dusk and dawn when the temperatures are cooler and nocturnal animals are either beginning their night’s activities or winding down. We head out on our first game drive just as it begins to get light, so the time differs slightly depending on the season.

Start the day bright and early with a wake-up call and tea or coffee. Enjoy breakfast before you depart for a morning game drive (or have it packed as a picnic to take with you). You’ll arrive back at camp mid-morning, with a chance to freshen up before lunch.

After a leisurely lunch, enjoy some downtime. Read a book or just relax and soak up the atmosphere. Refuel with afternoon tea before we depart for an afternoon/evening game drive with sundowners. Return in time for a relaxing evening of drinks around the campfire and dinner

Game drives

Game drives are led by expert local guides. We depart early in the morning and again late in the afternoon when it’s coolest and we’re most likely to see predators on the move.

Hot-air balloon rides

Don’t miss out on a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to soar above the Serengeti in a hot-air balloon, appreciating the full scope of the wildebeest migration and watching the colors change as the sun rises. This experience is at an additional cost and is weather-dependent.

Serengeti National Park

Family safaris

We welcome families with children over 5 years old and have a large family tent with two separate bedrooms. Depending on camp occupancy, we may be able to accommodate younger children. Please enquire and we can advise further. Note that, although our guides and camp team happily cater to younger guests, Olakira has no specific program for children. Please ask your agent for information regarding private vehicles for your family’s safari.

Meals and refreshments

We source our organic produce from local farmers for a menu of wholesome, delicious meals. Start the day with a continental buffet or a full English breakfast. At lunch, the light buffet includes fresh salads and homemade bread. Dinner is a three-course affair served in the dining tent or under the stars.
